Dealing With Other People's Trauma, Tuesday 12/2, 3rd period
“Today is…loud…” Stark said with a sigh, glaring at his phone which persisted in playing Carol of the Bells. So did the screen in the room where movies were sometimes shown. And, presumably, any other speakers in the room. Other phones. The intercom system which almost never made noise at all.
“This happens sometimes. Things you can’t escape from. I suppose you could find a spot with nothing that could conceivably play any sounds but it can be difficult. Especially when it’s cold, unless the cold doesn’t bother you. Easier to find a place outdoors, I think. But I don’t like being cold. I’ll stay indoors. Where I can be warm.”
He sighed. “And where it is loud, today. But. I’ve brought earplugs should any of you want them. I would have brought headphones but those won’t help, not today.” Even noise-canceling ones would just be playing the same song over and over today. No noise would be canceled at all.
“To help keep out the sound,” he explained, probably unnecessarily. “Take some if you like, if you’d rather things were quieter. And there are snacks, here, of course, if you’d like.” There were always snacks. There were cookies today. Plenty of chocolate.
“We don’t have to talk today,” Stark said. “But we can, if you like. About why things like inescapable sounds might be hard. Or even why the cold might be. Things you can’t get away from. But you can also just take your earplugs and go, if you’d rather.”
