Galactic Tourism, 2nd period

"Hello, everybody!" Lana was dressed for the cold, and she had handwavily advised you to be as well, but she also had a few long coats for those who might not have their own.

"Today we're going to a planet that I personally find lovely, but that's a bit cold." The portal opened, and she led them into the mouth of a cave from which they could see a night-time sky full of stars and nebulae, with meteors streaking down every now and again. Under that sky were giant crystal ridges thrusting up over a snowy landscape.

If they turned around to look into the cave, it was every bit as spectacular, with glowing crystals of green, blue, and purple clustered all over.

"Welcome to Ilum," Lana said, smiling. "This is where most of the Jedi of my day get their lightsaber crystals. I think you can see why. It's also just beautiful in its own right. As long as you stay away from the contested zones. We're far away from of those today, don't worry."

She nodded toward the outside. "Feel free to explore, but don't go too far. And if you see a wild tauntaun, don't approach it; they can be very territorial." They'd kill you faster than a wampa. Ask me how I know. "And if you want to cut a crystal off, please ask someone who knows what they're doing." She gestured to herself and Jack (if he was here).

"Otherwise, I thought I'd have a bit of coffee and just enjoy the view. Feel free to join me." She'd brought an entire picnic service of the stuff, courtesy of the Perk.

Obviously, Summer was considering hacking off a shard or two (or five of those crystals. And, like, if Lana mentioned it being an option in the first place, she'd be stupid not to, really!

But, mostly, she was just feeling cold, despite having bundled up (very cutely, be tee dubs), and thinking of the potential of a caf/jello cantina in a place like this...

The views outside were amazing but it was cold and inside the cave was equally if not more beautiful so Belle ended up in there, soaking it all in.

If she ended up with a blue crystal, well, it was good to have souvenirs to remember trips by!

"Of course!" Lana said. Look, the Jedi might be precious about them, but she wasn't. A few students taking home pieces wasn't going to beggar the galaxy.

"Flashy," Jack commented, wandering around with his hands in his pockets. "Probably should grab some spares."

"You could switch to blue," Lana suggested.

"Why in space would I switch to blue?" Jack asked. "Do I look like a doe-eyed braindead do-gooder to you?"

Lana pretended to think about it. Then she grinned. "Look, there's nothing wrong with the color itself. I can't help its associations."

"I was--" Am? Space knew. "--a Jedi," Jack said, rolling his eyes. "Those colors mean something."

"Do they?" Lana asked. "I thought it was just whichever crystal they felt like. I never thought to ask if there was more to it."

"Yeah, blue is for Guardians, the guys who are meant to go in and beat people up," Jack said lightly. "Green is Sentinels, the eggheads who spend most of their time figuring out how the work the Force."

"Sentinels," Jack said wryly. "Who do all the important practical stuff while the Consulars are busy holding endless meetings and the Guardians are trying to punch their way through the wall."

Lana laughed. "I see how it is. Is there a practical reason for the difference, or just tradition?" she asked curiously.

Because all roleplaying games need Warriors, Mages and Thieves. Jack shrugged. "If you want to know that kind of stuff, you'd have to talk to Mical. He's the historian," he said.

"Maybe I will. Or I could ask one of our Jedi historians, but I'd like to troll check in on Mical anyway."

"Could I get a little piece of each?" Charlie asked. "Or at least a little blue and purple?"

"Of course." Lana smiled. "Would something about this size do?" She gestured about a finger's length.

"Perfect!" Charlie said, all but dancing in place. "Thank you so much!"

Lana took out the tools she'd brought, found a good face of crystal, and felt for the breaks in it with the Force before breaking a small piece free. It lost some of its glow once separated, but not all of it.

She handed it to Charlie with a smile. "Normally, in order to use it in a lightsaber, the Jedi or Sith using it would focus on it, creating a bond and imbuing it with a bit of their own Force signature. I don't know if your magic works similarly enough, but it's something to consider."

Charlie considered that for a moment. "I don't want it to be a lightsaber - cool as that would be - but if I bond with it or fill it with my energy... does that make it dangerous? Or can I use it for more like a lightshow?"

"You can use it for anything you like," Lana said. "Bonding to it makes it more responsive to you, more powerful in your hands, and harder for others to use it." She smiled. "I wasn't expecting you'd make a lightsaber of it, that's just their most common use. They can power other things as well. One man used them for stealth cloaks on his armada."

"Mmmm...." Charlie said thoughtfully as a grin appeared on her face. "I have some ideas then."

"Oh, dear." Lana laughed. "Do I want to know, or should I have plausible deniability?"

"No nefarious plans," Charlie assured her. "Well, not yet. But in addition to awesome mood lighting they might just make incredible sort of mini power extenders for my charms - let them last longer or be more powerful."

She grinned. "And if I combine them with my singing and playing... who knows?"
