Norse Life, Tuesday Period 2

Thor did not remember signing up to teach this workshop, but Thor was already familiar with the capricious nature of the office moose, so he had resigned himself to it quickly. Once the students arrived in the Danger Shop they would find it transformed into a great feasting hall, the tables laden with all manner of roasted meats and fine beverages, and Thor waiting for them seated in a throne upon the dais.

Welcome to Asgard as it once was, students.

"Good morning!" he greeted them in his booming voice. "On this, the day of my kinsman Tyr, we begin our journey into the life of the Norsemen! Some of you may know them from the tales of the Vikings, which were a mere part of the rich tapestry of Norse life. In this workshop, we shall get merely a taste of what life was like in days of old, living in a band with one's friends and fighting mighty monsters..." He trailed off, looking like he was reminiscing. Ah, they had been good times. But this week, we shall feast! And you shall each tell me your name, and what you already know about the Norsemen. All the proper traditions must be observed, you see. Let us begin."

And so is Don, who has been wandering about the hall inspecting details of the recreation this entire time, for those who might be able to see spirits.

"Illyana Rasputin," Yana said, grabbing some of that roasted meat because free food. "I'm Russian and grew up on a Siberian commune until I was six, so most of what I know about the Norse is... honestly, probably Anti-Normanism propaganda, but I was six so I wasn't really absorbing any of it beyond the fact that stories of Viking raiders were thrilling and scary."

"Then I was in a sorcery apprenticeship for the next seven years, so everything I know about the Norse has to do with their gods and and their magic." Illyana shrugged. "Actual history? Not so much."

Liliana Vess

(What! They were known for bathing!)

Oh hell yeah, this was an excellent way to introduce a class. Liliana was helping herself to a haunch of boar and berries. "My name is Liliana Vess. I'm not from this plane, so I know very little, but certain aspects remind me of..." For a moment, she nearly said 'my home in Dominaria' but pivoted at the last minute "...a plane named Kaldheim, though I'll admit to knowing very little about it, as Planeswalkers cannot cross the Cosmos, which surrounds the World Tree, from which the Ten Realms hang."

Henry of Skalitz

Stewart was planning on just eating and avoiding doing the introduction thing if he could help it, but once other people started in on them, he started to just feel left out.

"Stewart," he offered, in that usual squinting way that make it seem like he expected someone to object to that. "And I suppose you could say my knowledge of the Norse life has ben uninvited with the rote media presentations throughout various mediums, but especially video games. Movies. Television shows. Rock music. So it'll be interesting to see what they managed to get right and what has clearly been blatant conflagerations for the sanitized consumption of the Hollywood-addled masses."

Food! Henry, being 19 and thus a food-motivated boy, was a bit busy scarfing down everything he even vaguely recognized. Mm.

At least if he was in the afterlife, it was a kind one, where he didn't have to go hungry.

"I'm Henry of Skalitz," he offered. "And I don't know anything, really. Have you lot ever been to Bohemia before? Where's Norse anyway? Do you mean like, north of Prague?"

If they had, well, he had only just learned how to read.

The name 'Illyana Rasputin' sounded vaguely familiar, but Thor couldn't pin down from where. He did ask, though, "Sorcery? Of what type?"

The '-heim' suffix was interesting, as was, "You have knowledge of the World Tree, but exist outside of it?" Weird, Liliana. He didn't like it.

Someone needs to take this kid's thesaurus away.

Thor smothered his smile at Don's commentary. "Hm. We shall see how enlightening this workshop will be." Which was a vague way of saying that Thor didn't really have a plan yet.

Oh, dear.

"You have heard of Prague and Bohemia, but not the Norse?" Thor double checked. "What of Scandinavia? Perhaps Sweden, or Norway? Vikings? The Danes?" He was just throwing stuff at a wall to see what stuck.

"That World Tree only exists in Kaldheim," Liliana explained. Well, 'explained,' since it didn't illuminate much. "Imagine an egg. Inside, the yolk is suspended in the albumen--the World Tree surrounded by the cosmos. The entire egg is the plane of Kaldheim, and inside the yolk, nurtured by their World Tree, are the Ten Realms. I, however, am from outside of the shell entirely, from a different egg of my own. I am a Planeswalker, I can walk from egg to egg, or plane to plane, as easily as one can step from one shop to another in town."

Don was getting a little finger waggle of a wave, on the off-chance he thought she might not be able to see him today.

"... Not really, no," Henry said, blinking. "And of course I've heard of Prague. Bohemia's where I live." A pause. "Lived? I'm still not entirely clear on that bit. Either the living itself, or the where of it. Er, but I suppose that's not relevant. Where's Scandinavia?"

"The first apprenticeship was Chaos and Black magic, as I was being raised in a realm called 'Limbo,'" she said dryly. "My current apprenticeship is much more well-rounded in subject matter; creation magics, defensive, incantational, offensive, various runic invocations...one of my mentors is even teaching me how to wield Faltinian magic."

This apprenticeship involved a lot less world-ending and far more world-saving!

"North," Thor told him. "And a bit to the west."

Someone really needed to show Henry a map at some point. With a 'You Are Here' star, to really fuck him up.

Don waved back at Liliana, but didn't say anything.

"Interesting," Thor said. "We have long been aware, to an extent, of that beyond the World Tree in my own universe, but I do not believe that is how it is constructed...but then I am far from an expert." Thor's area of expertise was hitting things really hard with a hammer.

You'd lost him, Illyana. "I wish you success. The gaining of knowledge is a worthy pursuit." Probably.

Steve Rogers ~~not holding Mjolnir because he doesn't know about that yet~~

"Sadly, we've reached about the end of my knowledge as well," Liliana said. "I cannot cross the Cosmos, though I've been there to see it, at least. The Cosmos and several of the monsters that dwell within it."

Because she'd wanted to try. Obviously. Liliana didn't take kindly to being told she couldn't do something.

~~But he was a western RPG protagonist, 'You Are Here' stickers were the only way he knew how to navigate!~~

"Oh," said Henry, comprehension dawning on his face. "Saxony."

Charlie Gale

"I'm Charlie Gale," she said, once she'd filled her plate and grabbed some mead. "I'm from Canada. I don't know a lot about the Norse, but what little I do sounds awesome!"

"Hi," Steve said. "I'm Steve Rogers and you live with us. How potent is the mead?"

Belle

Belle was delighted at the feast and was happily trying little bits of various foods while drinking some ale. She'd have to try the mead next.

"I'm Belle and I only know a bit that I've read about in books. Mostly fiction, I believe, and myths."

Vague, but, "I appreciate your enthusiasm, Miss Gale. We shall see if we can add to your knowledge whilst we adventure."

Thor had to smile at him, because paintball hadn't happened yet. "That I do. Good morning, Steve. Alas, it is a low alcohol variant," Thor said. "I want the humans to remember what happens here. It will do little for the likes of you or I, but it does not taste bad at all."

"You would be surprised at how much truth can be found in myths," Thor, the god of thunder sitting in front of her, said. "Though they do get some things...quite wrong, I must say."

That was Charlie. When she doesn't have an answer she punts!

"I can't wait," she said with her cheerful grin. "And this food is amazing, by the way."

"We've got games about Vikings at the store?"

Sorry, Thor, Vi was very much of a different world.
