Potatoes!, Friday, Second Period
"It's a beautiful day, my friends," Raiden greeted his class today, "because today we are going to combine potatoes with one of their very best friends: cheese." Was that the heavenly choir singing or was it just in his head? Probably the latter. Angels weren't much for singing at fun moments where he was from.
Actually, he wasn't sure they knew what fun was. Sad.
Anyway! "That's right: today we're gonna make (and then eat) a beautiful potato gratin, which is a dish of thinly sliced and layered potatoes and onions, topped with a creamy, gorgeous cheese sauce. What could be better? Now, you have a couple of options for how to slice your veggies. You can use a knife, of course, but not everybody's knife skills are up to getting thin, uniform slices of potato, and that's okay! That's why someone invented the mandoline, although if you do go that route I'm gonna have to insist you wear the cut-proof gloves I provided, because it's easy to get in a groove and suddenly need a trip to the ER. But let's get started on making our delicious cheesy potatoes!"
