The Great British Bakeoff! But American! - 2nd Period

It was a good thing that Ignis had made sure the Danger Shop's fire alarms worked on Monday because the teachers for the Great American Bake Off Class had been known to use the shrieking of the fire alarm to tell when their food was finished.

The room was set up just like the show on Netflix, so the students had come into a white tent that was going to be subject to the elements (so today it was freezing.) Their benches came complete with standing mixers, porcelain bowls, and tiiiiiny ovens with doors that could accidentally be ripped off even if you weren't a super soldier.

"Welcome to Cake Week!" Steve said excitedly from the front of the room.

Tony nodded like he'd ever baked a cake that wasn't somehow both burned and underdone in the middle. He was a scientist and still managed that, everyone. "We'll start out easy with box cakes that we want you to make taste better with a handwaved assortment of ingredients you can use to boost things."

"Please make them taste nice," Steve asked. "You can follow the directions on the back of the box if you need help, and then Tony and I will come around and taste them. After that, we'll give you another challenge, and finally you'll have a homework assignment to bring with you next week."

"This was the best idea," Steve declared, "because we get to eat cake!"

He had not, admittedly, tried any of the cakes yet.

Why was Yelena here? Was it the moose or her employer? Yelena was not sure. She had also never truly baked before. So she decided just to make a red velvet cake with actual beets. Because beets were awesome. Who didn't like beets?

Possibly someone who didn't like the fact that when Yelena made the cake she didn't totally puree the beets so there were raw beet chunks in the cake. She also ran out of time so she used frosting that came in one of those tubs with a plastic lid that tasted more like lard than actual frosting.

When Tony and Steve approached (if the decided to deal with this trainwreck of a dessert), Yelena would cross her arms and glare at them as if daring them to dislike what she made.

"This is a red velvet cake made with actual beets and fake frosting. Enjoy."

Yelena looked at the instructions and frowned. No room for experimenting? Just follow the recipe? Bor-ing.

She made the cake anyway and was now just glaring at Hannibal because his cake still looked better than hers.

Rude.

Yelena raised her hand. "Do we actually have to cry when making the cake? Or can we use those fake tear things that come in tiny eye dropper bottles?"

"I love beets," replied Steve with an earnest, World War II era, enthusiasm. "What made you choose a red velvet cake?"

"It was the box closest to me and I like beets," Yelena said after an awkward pause. "And since red velvet was made with beets I figured what the hell, why not?"
the_best_sister: (Oooo. Not good.)

"Oh. Tiers not tears. Right. That makes more sense," Yelena said with a click of her tongue.

"Was it really made with beets?" asked the teacher who should probably have known that to teach the class.

Yelena paused a moment before pulling out her phone, googling "beets red velvet cake", and then nodding in response to Steve.

"Yes. Absolutely."

Who is she to argue with the internet. It is always right.

"So that makes this health food, really," Steve decided wrongly, "since beets are so good for you."

Yelena looked at her cake where she noticed that the top of the cake had collapsed in slightly and how much frosting she had used to cover the cake and then looked back at Steve.

"I'm not sure cake can ever be considered healthy."

"I hate to disagree with my boss but this is a baking class and not an engineering class," Yelena said, diplomatically.

Nell was doing well enough with her cake, which would have been quite delicious if the door to her oven hadn't fallen off before it was totally cooked. So while it might have tasted semi-decent it certainly was not completely cooked through, leaving some definite over gooey parts in the middle.

"This should be a chocolate cake with a mocha chocolate frosting," which really was quite tasty, "But I'm afraid my cake isn't all the way baked through."

Nell... had no oven with which to bake her pound cake. She shook her head. "Give me a good wood stove anytime."

"Well, maybe not, but it's a sometimes food," he said.

A sometimes food that he was eating ten pieces of today.
