Daily Modern Life, Monday
Jon was...out of sorts today. The weekend had been interesting, to say the least.
But he was here, he was determined to get through this, and he was at his stiff and Oxford professorial best as a consequence.
"Welcome to Daily Modern Life," he began once everyone was presumably here. "This is a course designed to acquaint those of you from different times and places with how to do some useful things in this one. The first class is traditionally for introductions, but as we have quite a bit to get through, we'll also be engaging in our first lesson. So if you would all please introduce yourselves with your name and where and when you are from, as well as anything in particular you are interested in learning, we'll get started.
"To begin, I am Jonathan Sims. You may call me Mr. Sims or Jon. I am from Bournemouth, England, by way of London, in more or less the present time."
He nodded to the first person.

Class activity - listen and ask questions!
He walked over to the wall and demonstrated. "These sockets have electricity going through them, so sticking anything in them other than a cord is a very bad idea. Sometimes things that require power are attached in ways that the socket isn't obvious, such as the lights. These are usually turned on and off by an attached string or a switch on the wall." He turned the lights off and back on. "Sometimes switches turn power to the sockets off and on, too. Individual items may also have their own switches, so that you don't need to unplug them to turn them off."
He picked up a torch he'd brought with him. "Electricity can also be generated by batteries." He opened it to show them. "These provide power in a more mobile form. Often the things powered by them will have a switch on the body to turn them on and off." Which he did, then passed the torch around.
"If there are any questions, I will do my best to answer them."
