Wilderness Survival; Wednesday, Second Period [03/13].

Well, everyone! You were back in Duscae again this week, and, while, sure, Gladio could have just done this lesson on the generic mountain, but all the talk lately about trips home had him feeling that nostalgic ache a little bit again, and he'd really wanted to use some Eosian beasts for this lesson, besides, so it just felt appropriate.

Even more so that he had Ignis there with him for this one, too.

"You guys may have noticed sort of a trend in the lessons lately," he started with a wry grin, "that might have already had you speculating on what we're doing today, and, if the weapons I've got here with me aren't the final nail in the coffin....we're working on hunting big game today. Now, usually, in survival situation, hopefully, small game, foraging, and fishing'll be enough to do ya, but if it's really rough, or we're talking about an apocalyptical situation that requires sustaining along with survival, knowing how to take down some heavy hitters for a more substantial meal. I know not everyone's a fighter and not everyone's going to be naturally inclined or trained to take down a behemoth, and if that's you, you're definitely not going to perfect it in one class period, but hopefully, you can at least get a feel for it, and pursue improving on it in your own time if you feel it'll be helpful.

"And, of course," he continued, "once you actually have the beast down, it's important to know what to do with it, too, and that's what I've got Ignis here for today. Don't get me wrong, he can show you some great ways to take down a beast, too, but where he excels that I don't is in knowing how to turn that beast into food afterwards. So we'll spend a little time talking about different methods of big game hunting, then we'll chat about big game butchering, and then give you the chance to try either of them on your own.

"Sound like a good plan? Then let's get into it..."

On the Hunting side, you've got Gladio going over a wide variety of weapons, especially the ones more traditionally used for hunting: bows, spears, knives and daggers, although he will also sing the praises of just slicing something down with a big ass sword, although he realizes not everyone was the strength for that sort of thing. Demonstrations, too, on how to use each weapon and invitations to come up and try the techniques and forms and getting comfortable with the weapon in your hand...

...and then you've got Ignis, who, with apologies for those a little less weak at heart about the actual source of where meat might come from, relied on an physical specimen he could feel rather than just charts and graphs where all he could do was guess that what he was talking about aligned with what he was pointing out. With consideration to the practical portion of the class, he tried to keep his breakdown of the good parts of most animals from getting too exhaustive, and showed a few techniques that would hopefully make skinning, cutting, butchering, etc, etc, etc, much easier.

Try to take down some of the big game of Duscae! You've got the docile and mostly friendly Garula, which won't even attack unless provoked. Less so with the tough, armored Bulette, which is a target better for hunters with experience already. The Gigantoad might be a good middle ground between two (and tastes just like chicken!), and the Behemoth is less common in Duscae, you're more likely to find them in Liede, but there's literally only one other person who would know that, and, besides, they were just one of Gladio's personal favorites to go up against.

And if you manage to successfully take down a beast, you can start practicing dismantling it into meat!

And don't worry! Even if you don't manage to take down a beast, there's plenty to go around to just practice that part with, too, if you want!

Whenever Gladio did these Eos sims, he would always be left with some weird mixed feelings, although right now? Those mixed feelings were definitely in thinking about what he wouldn't give to have some Cup Noodle^TM with fresh Behemoth meat in it right now...

Whenever Ignis dealt with one of these Eos sims, he also had a good deal of mixed feelings. Perhaps not quite as strong as some of Gladio's, but right now? He was mostly shaking his head over the fact that Gladio was probably just thinking about how badly he wanted to ruin a perfectly good Behemoth steak by putting it into a Cup Noodle^TM.

Nell killed a Giantoad pretty handily and then settled in to the butchering. She might not have ever butchered one of them before, but it wasn't that hard to adjust.

"I can't even tell you," Gladio stated, by way of greeting, coming over to Nell once he'd sort of taken care of everything he needed to for the end of class, shaking his head and leaning in for a kiss, hand going out to rest on her back as he did, "how much I'm wishing this sim were real right now. I don't know what you might have planned for dinner tonight, but if it's not meaty, I'm rioting."

"Steak tonight, then?" Nell said with a smile. She leaned into him a little. "Pretty sure that can be arranged."

"Perfect," Gladio grinned with that little lean into him, helping with that by pulling her into another kiss.

"Well," he then amended, chuckling faintly, "almost perfect. Would be even better if I could go out there and bring the steak home real fresh, but this place has all those pesky hunting laws and restrictions..."

Somehow, he didn't think local rangers or authorities would take too kindly to him just going out and trying to cleave his way through some elk or bears or bison or whatever with his giant freaking sword.

"When we go to Soulwood," Nell said, "You can hunt one of the deer and we'll butcher it and bring it back with us. If there's too much meat I'm sure we can find others who might like some fresh venison."

As a matter of fact, Ignis' attention was already quirked their way, despite (Gladio was sure) his best attempts not to eavesdrop, and Gladio snorted.

"Yeah," he said, "I don't think that'd be much of a problem. Deer hunting pretty good out there?"

"I have a small group of them on my land," she said with a fond smile. "Enough that culling one won't hurt it any."

She loved the deer and all the creatures on her land, but balance was important.

There was a slight bit of a pouting expression at that one, but honestly? There wasn't that much in it, not with a smile like that on Nell's face and the clear love she had for that land. He shook his head a little, as that pout made way for some fondness of his own. "I really can't wait to see it for myself," he said.

There were going to be quite a few other emotions, mixed in there for him, but he was determined to just let how important Soulwood was to Nell rule out over all of it.

If any of the examples were birds, Arden was going to excuse herself to be quietly, but thoroughly, sick.

If they all remained not-birds she was...okay, fine didn't cover it, but at least not throwing up! That was a bonus!

Arden had never hunted or killed anything in her life - one might argue she still hadn't, considering this was the Danger Shop - and you know? She was trying. A for effort, baby girl. Solid C for execution.

"You're really gonna look at me and say one's enough after you've seen how I eat, huh?" asked Gladio, with a skeptical lift of his eyebrows, but with a chuckle and a shake of his head. "And that," he gestured toward one of the massive garulas, just minding its own business, not a care in the world, "is what I'm used to!"

"We are not dragging more than one deer carcass back through the portal with us," Nell said with a laugh. "Not of my deer at least. There will be other times."

She nodded towards the creatures. "You can always come hunt here if you feel the need."
