Tactics of War, Monday, 6 - 8 PM FHT
Honor is standing at the front of the room as always, though today she isn't wearing her uniform. Today, she's relaxed in cargo pants, a tee shirt, and a jacket, her long hair pulled back in a ponytail. A cup from The Perk is resting just to her right, the graded exams and sign in sheet to her left, and Nimitz is sprawled across the desk behind them. There are cookies on the table again, this time with cold sodas, milk, water, and hot chocolate.
In the classroom proper, there are medium-sized red bags on each desk -- one for each student. "If you'll come in and have a seat for just a moment, we'll make this a very short class. And we'll get to the bags shortly."
She waits as the students take their seats, and offers a smile. "I know this second half of the term was very different from what Professor Carter was offering, and I thank each of you for sticking with it. In these short few weeks, we've examined not only historical situations, but also elements such as intelligence and leadership which will affect your planning. We've barely scratched the surface on the idea of grand strategy; each of you, however, has a fairly good idea that your actions in warfare can't take place in a vacuum -- that, as the theory goes, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
"On your desk is a small gift. While chess has long been considered the classic game to help study strategy and tactics, I recently came across this, and thought it was a fun idea, with much the same application. Unlike chess, each warrior is different -- they have different special traits, attack grids, and support cards. In other words, there's a lot more here that you'd have to react to or plan for. It also reinforces the idea that, while you can build a solid strategy, the enemy can still surprise you." Honor grinned, rubbing the tip of her nose. There may or may not be an interesting story concerning her own trials of the game. If so, she's not telling.
Folding her arms, Honor pauses, allowing Nimitz to take his usual spot on her shoulder. "It's been a fun semester, and I hope you've enjoyed the class as much as I've enjoyed teaching it. Feel free to grab a cookie, a drink; bust open your cards and play if you wish. If not, take them and play this summer.
"Your graded finals are here, on the desk." She lays a hand flat against them. "If you want them, pick them up on your way out. I'll be here for a few minutes to answer any last minute questions and discuss any thoughts concerning your papers. If not, good luck, and I hope I'm lucky enough to see you either this summer or in the fall.
"Class dismissed."
[Okay, crew. That's a wrap! Thanks for sticking with me. I hope you guys have enjoyed the conversations, and maybe you learned a little here and there? Drop a line if you have any questions or whatnot.
Props to Chris Heard, who runs Dystemporalia, where I snagged some of the card lists linked to up above. If you guys are interested and get the chance, you should try the game out some time. I'm still learning, but there's something really entertaining about having Queen Medb duking it out with Achilles or even Rob Roy MacGregor. There is, after all, a reason they call it "anachronism." Hee!]
