Learn to have fun! Monday, 3rd period

Class was back in the Danger Shop today, but instead of a library, they would walk into a lovely beach cove. A warm beach.

"It's been rather cold lately," Jon started, "so I thought we could, well, enjoy ourselves and warm up a bit."

He pointed over to one side. "There's a sort of shop there, though no money required. You can get swimming costumes and towels and such. Going in the water is not required, though - there's plenty of beach to lounge on. But, um. Clothing of some sort is required." Navaan. "If you do want to go into the water, there are also, by request, jet skis." Here, where the safeties would keep anyone from getting hurt.

"I, um. I didn't program any fish to look at or anything. If there's something you'd like that isn't here, just let me know, I suppose."

Beach day!

It's a lovely pseudo-Caribbean beach, with lots of warm sand, sun, and surf.

Have fun! Swim, jet ski, lounge on the sand, or do other beachy things.

Jon will probably be wading a bit. He's unconvinced about the jet skis.

He's here! And he can add things to the program if you want.

I want a warm beach.

Gladiolus Amicitia

Clothing of some sort required, but not shirts! Tarps off, boys! Gladio's was practically gone the moment he stepped out onto the fake beach.

"I'm beginning to suspect that lending me your shirt was as much to avoid wearing one as anything," Jon said, smiling a little.

Navaan

Navaan stepped into the Danger Shop, looked around at all the sun, and screeched.

"I'M GONNA DIE! I'M GONNA DIE! I'M GONNA DIE!"

"What?" Jon looked around frantically. And then the Eye finally decided to be useful. "Oh, hell. Hold on!"

He quickly programmed in a cabana with a sunproof roof around her. "Sorry! Sorry. Um. I-I think maybe the safeties would keep that from happening, but I'm really very sorry!"

Look, you were weird, Navaan, but he didn't want to kill you!

Navaan was looking at him with big, sad, scared eyes. "I was gonna explode," she accused.

Actually, it was the Danger Shop, so she would be entirely fine, but it wasn't like she knew that.

"I-I'm really very sorry!" Jon winced. "I didn't know that...um. Well, vampires are...are really very different in my world, and I didn't know. But, um. You...if you want to, that is...you can try slowly and see if the safeties keep you...um. Safe. And if not, I can program anything...w-well, anything safe for school into here for you to have fun with."

"How do you safely test whether or not sunlight is gonna make you explode?"

"Oh, come on, now," said Gladio, with a snort, and a grin on his face that suggested that maybe Jon wasn't too far off, "it was at least fifty/fifty that I'm practically allergic and you really needed a new one, man."

"Er...well, um. Stick your hand out and see if it gets hotter than it should?"

Look, Jon made excellent choices all around.

"I-I did, yes. And I still thank you. But I might have bought you something else in thanks if I had known," Jon said.

"I said explode, not catch on fire!" Navaan pointed out, pursing her lips.

"Ah. Is it...that is, I would expect that fire came first," Jon said. "Is, um, that is...I don't suppose there are any warning signs before you explode, then."

"Nope!" Navaan said, sulking. "Just a FIKTUUM!! and then anyone nearby is knocked back and covered by glistening slime." Beat. "Duh."

"Oh. I-I'm sorry," Jon said again, quietly. "So, um. If there's something you'd like to do here in the shade, I can program it in. But it has to be safe for a school." No flang. "Maybe...maybe beach volleyball in the shade. Or a lounge to lie back and enjoy the wind. Or...I don't know, honestly. Sandcastles or something."

Navaan considered this. "Like a really big tent full of cushions and alcohol and a hookah full of good drugs?"

That had been really safe! She'd been far too sleepy to do anything else!

Gladio just shrugged that off. "That's practically ancient history by now, anyway," he said, then snorted faintly again, with a shake of his head. "I'm surprised you even still remember that..."

Granted, he knew it had been a lot longer for him than it was for Jon, but remembering it did bring a faint smile to his face. "Talk about an entrance, though."

"Er...A tent full of cushions and just a little alcohol, but no drugs," Jon counteroffered.

"A tent full of cushions and a medium amount of alcohol and I keep my shirt on, unlike that guy," Navaan counter-counteroffered, pointing at Gladio, who had been her argument that she should get to be topless, too.

Sam Eagle

"Madam," Sam squawked, "that noise is entirely unnecessary!"

Gladio, unlike some vampire women in the class, was getting an approving nod in the direction of his glorious eagle tattoo.

Jon...would probably regret this, but he was willing to choose his battles.

"Fine." He frowned at the controls, and turned the cabana into a kind of yurt, not too brightly colored, with a veritable nest of layers of pillows, and a medium-ish crate of beer.

"Your face is unnecessary!" Navaan shot back. "I DUN WANNA DIE!"

"Yay!" Navaan cheered and immediately began stripping down out of her damp outwear. Look, she was going to keep her underthings on, that absolutely counted towards their bargain.

And then she was cracking open a cold one and snuggling down into the cushions. "This is...almost fun," she declared.

Jon glowered warningly at Sam, making it as impressive as he could (which was surprisingly much, given his usual demeanor). "We do not shame people for their fears. Or for alerting people to danger."

Jon breathed a sigh of relief when she stopped undressing. And underwear were absolutely as good as a bikini.

"I'm glad." He offered her a smile. "That is what the class is about, after all."

If Navaan weren't so busy flailing about in danger, she would thank Jon for his intervention.

He probably wouldn't appreciate the ways she attempted to show her gratitude, so it probably all worked out for the best, but it was the thought that counted?

Anything more than a handshake or verbal acknowledgement would definitely be awkward, so Jon would just live in blissful ignorance for as long as he could.

Jon's smile turned a little sad. "It was the first time anyone had been kind to me in...in a while." He shrugged awkwardly. "Of course I remember it."

And Gladio's own smile softened with sympathy, lifting a hand to try and offer Jon a little support and encouragement with the weight of it on his shoulder.

Little did he know that, apparently, his underestimating the effect the little gestures he did without really thinking about them too much was to be a theme that day.

"Then I'm gladio I got to be there to help, especially if it's far from being the last."

Jon let himself lean into that hand a bit (if only to keep it from pushing him over). "I'm glad you were, too. Even if it does make me do lunatic things like exercise voluntarily."
