The Art of Bashō; Tuesday, Second Period [06/06].

"So far in this class," said Shunsui, once class was gathered once more underneath the tree by the pond in the park, with a few little booklets scattered around the circle and a pot of tea ready to be enjoyed, "we've talked a bit about some of Bashō's milestone works, but not too much about his poetry itself. Today, then, we shall change that ♥. Now, the man was incredibly prolific, so one does run into the issue of barely knowing where to start, when picking out poems to look at, so what I've done for us today is compiled a small selection of some more popular or well-known poems, and we'll let you decide which ones you feel are worthy of being discussed ♥.

"Take a moment, get some tea, get comfortable ♥," that, in particular, got a smile out of him, of course, "and take a look through the poems, and when you've decided on one, we'll all have a look and discuss it a little further. Pretty simple, neh ♥? Grab a booklet and some tea and let us begin ♥."

Selectively.

There isn't much of one today, but it's a good time to start flipping through the booklets, getting some tea, or getting distracted by the ducks and flamingos by the pond.

Feel free to choose other poems, but this selection has some of his heavy-hitters. Is there one that particularly jumps out to you to share with the class? Then everyone can talk about what works, why it's a well-known one, why someone might enjoy it, or whatever else about it.

Or just read and drink tea or have a nap; surely, that's appreciating poetry in some way, too!

There's a good chance that the ones he says are his favorite are not the ones that are actually his favorite on that list, but, well....

My god, my head feels like absolute GARBAGE today. x_x

Eleanor Zarrin

"I think," offered Eleanor, after a while, having read through several of the poems a few times and having trouble choosing between a few of them, "my favorite of them is the one about the frog:

"An old silent pond...
A frog jumps into the pond,
splash! Silence again.

"That one. They all manage to say a lot without saying much, but that one in particular...it's almost perfect. To me."

Belle

Belle was not going to have a nap but she was enjoying her tea while she read.

"I quite like this one," she said.

"In the twilight rain
these brilliant-hued hibiscus -
A lovely sunset"

"I can picture it even though there's not much description."
