Photography 101; Wednesday, Second Period [01/25].

"Alright, everyone," said Prompto, once his students had arrived, clapping his hands together from where he'd been sitting on top of the desk at the front of the room, then hopped off to go get everything set up for their photo share. "By now, you should probably be able to guess how class today's going to go: let's have a look at how you did on your lighting assignment and maybe talk about it a little bit, before we get into today's topic, which is going to be different types of shots."

Short, simple, to the point, because the meat of the lesson was going to come in after they'd had a chance to look at some lighting pictures!

"Who's up first this week?"

Close up? Long shot? Bird's eye view?

Take a moment to show off the cool pictures you took last week and talk a little bit about how you tried to use various different lighting styles for certain effects!

"Now," Prompto grinned, once the photo share was done, and it was time to move on to him sharing photos...of examples...of today's topic! "We've talked about framing, we've talked about lighting, now it's time to break it down into types of shots to keep in mind when you're trying to snag a great pic. In general, you've got three basic ones: close-up, medium, and long, and within those, you've also got your extreme close-up and extreme long shots. Those are generally going to refer to the distance at which the picture is being taken. And then you've got your angle to consider, and with that, we're going to go over five basic ones: high angle, low angle, over the shoulder, bird's eye, and the Dutch angle or tilt. For the most part, the names are pretty self-explanatory, but let's get into some examples and the details so you can really start getting an idea of what makes them different from each other."

And if there's one thing Prompto will always have plenty of, it's photographic examples! And he's put together basically a slide-show of pictures to show off the various different types of shots mentioned, and you know he's going to take the time to break down how the examples fit the type of shot, things to consider when taking a shot like that, and, on occasion, also referring back to previous lectures by pointing out when a picture is a good examples of Rule of Thirds and interesting lighting use as well.

And since there's definitely a little bit of time left after the lecture, there's time to try and practice the different types of shots here in the classroom, where you can ask questions or run the pictures by Prompto if you're unsure about the specifications. And to make things a little more interesting, he'd brought in a 3D model city if they wanted to practice some of the trickier angles on a smaller scale.

He was at first a little surprised to find that the one he used to use for this class was still in the supply closet, until he remembered that it wasn't that strange, it hadn't even been a year in Fandom time; it barely had collected any dust!

He did feel a little awkward realizing how much it resembled Altissia, though, but he was trying not to think about that.

He's got plenty more examples, too, if you need them!

Jo had tried to take as many different shots as she could to show off as many different lighting techniques and the photos that she was most proud of were the ones she’d managed to take in the library when some of the shelves had disappeared as that had ended up being quite effective and she had definitely taken advantage of taking what photos she could that day.
