Diplomacy, Monday, September 5, 2022

Anakin looked like a guy who hadn't slept very well in a week and change, which...accurate, but not diplomatic to point out, kids.

"Since we got into the logistics of diplomacy immediately last week, we never really got the chance to talk about definitions of what diplomacy is," Anakin said, settling back against his desk. "Diplomacy, broadly speaking, is the art of compromise. Your goal is to make both sides--or all sides--believe they have gotten the better deal. Sometimes the best you can do is make all sides feel like they've been equally punished. If you end a negotiation with one side winning and the other side losing, the chances of you having to renegotiate very soon after is high."

He clapped his hands and his two children, Juliet and Christopher, walked into the room looking sulking. "This is Juliet--age 13, and Christopher, who's 10. They both want to be watching television on the big screen. They do not want to watch the same show." He smirked. "Negotiate."

Libby had plenty of experience negotiating with children, although it was usually Littles who needed it, and she'd certainly never done it regarding TV time before, considering they didn't even have one. And, really, if you asked her, Juliet was already old enough to know better and be willing to sacrifice such things to her younger sibling (especially her brother!), but if they were supposed to negotiate...

"I should think," she noted, with that gentle but firm tone reserved for the Littles, "you can each take turns with the television..."

"I think it's entirely possible that I could arrange for the tv to show both of your shows at the same time," Charlie offered.

Gray could do this. Gray came from a big family, and he would just channel Ala--no, nope, Al would just tell them to stop acting like children and go into his study and shut the door, and these were actual children, so that wouldn't work.

"Okay, well, what do you both want to watch?" They could start there, right? Maybe one of them's choice had more value than the other's.

Gray could work with this! "Maybe we can find something on Youtube you'd both enjoy?"

"Well," Gray said, "What do you want to watch?"

He had figured it out. He just had to treat them both like they were Daman when they were negotiating chore rotas.

Which was honestly a little better than what Libby had been expecting. She'd honestly been expecting an outright refusal to share, and she gave Christopher a soft smile.

"Well," she said, "Juliet is older, so if you ask me, that means she should get to go first. Unless..." And now her smile turned toward Juliet a little. "She's feeling like a generous sister and wants to let Christopher go first."

Her attention then shifted entirely to Juliet, her voice going a little quieter as if sharing something just between the two of them. "Believe me, as the older sibling myself, I know how it can be with Littles. Sometimes it's just easier to get it out of the way, and lead by good example, you know?"

"A little directional charm on your ears would solve that problem," Charlie said. "You'd hear yours, he'd hear his."

Charlie had done this more than once for her twin sisters.

Hey, a situation Vi was familiar with, even if television didn't exist back home, and nine times out of ten she'd sided with Powder.

"Since you can't decide between yourselves, we're watching what I pick."

Alara was not really familiar with this at all, she’d never had to worry about fighting with Solana for sharing electronics, “um…er…” she stopped as she tried to think of a solution, ““Um … who watched the tv first last time?” she considered, “maybe you could do it in reverse?” She suggested.
