Your teacher arrived dramatically, but mostly by virtue of anyone wearing a cape sort of had that air of drama about them. That was, of course, assuming you weren't distracted by the gun show of those arms, however.

"Welcome to class," she said once everyone else had arrived. "I'm Dr. Jane Foster and I'll be your teacher today, but maybe take it a little easy on me. I haven't been in an undergrad setting in a loooong long while."

She set the hammer she was carrying down on the teacher's desk with a dull and satisfying thud that implied that thing wasn't about to move anytime soon.

"So, the subject of the class is heroism and a guide to it. But I think that's kind of broad, don't you? I've always considered heroism more that possible for people even if they're not wearing kind of silly capes." Tsk, no respect for Asgardian fashion out of this one. "Growing up, it always meant not giving up on doing what was right or helping others. But that leads to the question that I want to pose to you all: what do you think being a hero is? That will really sort of inform what kind of class this will be."

Hyped as he was about this class, Graham was just going to need a moment to try not to pout over any particularly disparaging comments about capes right now.

"Oh, I think," said Graham, eagerly, "that what you said is exactly what my idea of a hero is! Someone who doesn't give up in doing what's right and helping others! That's definitely the kind of hero I'd like to be, anyway! And they've got to be strong, too, if not in body," he went a little sheepish, rubbing the back of his neck, with that one, with great emphasis on his noodly arms, "but at least in spirit! A hero has got to be brave, but they also should be compassionate and wise!"

"Precisely," Jane agreed enthusiastically. "I like to think I was still doing what I could to help with my mind before..."

Well, this bodacious Norse make over via magic hammer.

"Otherwise they're just a strong jerk if they don't have those qualities."

Vi was just going to pay very close attention to Jane's ~~arms~~ ~~lecture~~ arms, thanks.

"I think, to me at least..." Kurt said with a shy grin, "is someone who does the right thing. That might not always be the most dangerous, glamourous, or whatever. Sometimes being a hero is saving someone from a runaway car. Other times being a hero is standing up for someone who is being attacked. And a hero could be someone who knows when to fight when to strategize when to negotiate and what to do in any situation."

Kurt paused for a moment then added, somewhat timidly.

"I want to be a hero someday. It's been my dream for a while now, to be a part of the X-Men team and to help others, to use my abilities and such to help people. To be kind, just, wise, brave, compassionate, dependable, and selfless."

"Who are the X-Men?" Jane had to ask. Because, look, it took time to fully get creative control over those properties and then write them into the universe again.

Vi shrugged. "They're fictional," she said eventually.

"Oh right! Sorry, I forget that not everyone knows them (or has them in their collective movie conglomerate just yet)" Kurt said apologetically. "The X-Men are the super hero group in my world. People with special powers and abilities and gifts. They work to protect people and are very much superhero types!"

"You don't think heroes are real?" Jane asked, more as a clarification than a challenge.

Another shrug. "Not really," she said. "There are people with powers, and people who try to fix the bad shit in the world, but heroes? They're just in stories."

It wasn't like those stories were even a bad thing, they just weren't... realistic.

"Like the Avengers," Jane said, latching right onto that one touchstone there.

That was fair at least.

"I think heroes or the idea of them is sort of aspirational, you know?" Jane said. "That we can only keep trying and maybe we can be that for other people along the way."

It was very optimistic, wasn't it?

Kurt nodded. "And I hope one day I can be part of their team. I want to use my abilities to help others!"

Extremely optimistic.

"Maybe," Vi said. "I mean, Steph would probably agree with that."

"How about we work on it in class? We figure out where fiction and reality meet in a way that works for you?"

Because Vi? Really reminded her of Valkyrie.

"That is very admirable of you," Jane replied with a smile. "Seems like a few of you are on the same wave length as me."

Vi would totally take that as a compliment if she knew anything at all about Valkyrie.

"I guess." This was honestly far from the worst level of engagement Vi had shown in a class.
