Great Legends of Hyrule; Wednesday, Third Period [03/16].

The class would be meeting in the Danger Shop that week, which meant that Sidon was particularly excited about the lesson and all it would entail. And, apparently, what it would entail included a very moody, atmospheric forest cloaked in fog, the skeletal shapes of the leaf-less trees emerging around the ruins of some long-gone entryway. Although the air was temperate and mild, something about the misty desolation of it might just send a chill racing up your spine, but Sidon's eager grin might just be enough to chase it away.

"Nestled in the Great Hyrule Forest, on a island at the center of the great gorge known as Lake Mekar, is a vast and mysterious place known colloquially around Hyrule as the Lost Woods!"

And, yes, Siodn's voice dropped to an appropriately awed and enigmatic hush there.

"Not much is known about the Lost Woods, although many things are said about them, and it is of little surprise! The constant cloak of fog that wraps around the place keeps its mysteries far from prying eyes, and it is said that anyone who attempts to venture too deeply into the woods will find themselves either utterly lost for all eternity, or, if they are lucky, swept back to this very entrance instead, as if the very forest itself were politely escorting you to the door and asking you to leave! Naturally, the lure of attempting to solve such mysteries is a powerful one, and one that many adventurers of Hyrule have attempted to answer, but to no avail!

"When viewed from above, one might take notice of a burst of pale pink leaves at the very center of the fog and mist and skeletal branches, adding even more questions to the nature of this place. What is so special about this tree? How might one reach it? Will we ever truly know? The tree is said to be a great and powerful forest spirit, perhaps even a forest god, and I have even heard whispers that he may somehow be tied to the Sword that Seals the Darkness that we have mentioned in a previous lesson. It is also said that he looks over those known as Koroks, or Children of the Forest, who protect the forest and all the vibrant life that goes along with it, and that these mists and the deadly feeling of the Lost Woods is said to be merely a disguise to protect their realm and keep interlopers out. Only the truly worthy may find the path to the heart of the Lost Woods, and the vibrant Korok Forest within!

"And so today!" The grim enigmatic tone of Sidon's voice lifted back up in a burst of excitement and another broad grin. "That is what we shall attempt to do! Perhaps one of you may be worthy to discover the Korok Forest and the great Tree Spirit within the mysterious woods! Or perhaps we shall all be but lost souls in the mists, constantly whisked back here to this very spot to have to try again! Don't worry, though! There are torches throughout the forest to perhaps guide the way. How are these torches lit and maintained? Is it by the Forest Spirits themselves? Or perhaps the woodland creatures that seem to be able to gallavant through these woods without the same care and caution that we must take for ourselves? Perhaps. There is only one way to find out!"

This was proving to be a lot more difficult than Alara realised and she kept finding that all her attempts to make it through the woods led her off the path and getting sent back to the start.

She wasn’t having much luck with this.

Oh.

Oh.

Oh, well, this was dredging up a very, very old memory of Astrid's first summer here on the island, nearly four years ago, of being lost in the woods and tormented by manifestations of her guilt in the form of inanimate objects.

It was funny, wasn't it, how you thought some things had left you completely until you were suddenly and inexplicably confronted with them, and, just like that, she felt like she was slingshotted back in time, to that terrified and confused and lonely fourteen-year-old girl whose entire world had just been completely upended.

So, yeah. Astrid was going to just sit this one out. She had a feeling Sidon would understand...he'd been around then, too, she thought. Even if she was pretty sure he'd actually kind of loved that fish...

At one point, Libby thought maybe she'd gotten the hang of navigating through the fog. She just sort of took a moment to sort of let a feeling guide her, putting her trust in God (via the forest spirits! They could work in conjunction with each other, couldn't they?) to show her the way, and she was feeling like she was getting pretty far! But then, almost always at the same spot each time, she found herself moving one way, only to find herself surrounded by mist and then back at the entrance again, trying very hard not to start getting frustrated.

Maybe it was getting harder because she was getting closer, and therefor the fog was working extra hard to keep her out. Or maybe she needed a different strategy. Either way, she wasn't going to let a few restarts stop her, though she did spend a little time before each venture trying to think of what to do differently this time around.
