Mythbusting- Monday- 3rd period

There was no Danger Shop workshop today. Instead, class was held on top of a skyscraper, which was empty except for them because this was fake. Also, any barriers over the sides of the building also because this was fake.

"Welcome to New York," Kitty greeted the class. "This is the Empire State Building, and today we're going to test whether you can kill someone on the sidewalk by dropping a penny from here. Keep in mind this is the Danger Shop, no one down there is real, and essentially this isn't any different than beating up a dummy at the gym.

"So, here's a shiny penny," she said, holding one up. "Each of you will get to try it. We are 120 stories up, at 1,250 feet above that sidewalk. While falling, the penny will reach terminal velocity at 65 miles an hour. What do you think, would someone down there be in trouble?"

It seems to be Monday again.

Well, do you think it'll work? Why or why not?

"Okay, now drop your pennies," Kitty said from the side of the roof. "If you're still not comfortable with a person, let's see what it does to the sidewalk."

And then she dropped her coin.

Once everyone had done their part, they made their way to the sidewalk below, where the fake people were all frozen in place so as not to disturb the experiment scene. They'd find a couple pennies, not all, but no one flattened, and the sidewalk went unimpaled.

"So this myth is busted," she told them. "This is probably because the speed is too low and the penny's mass is too small. Plus you're dealing with wind gusts on the way down that could blow the penny off course so it never even gets here."

Did she grow up believing this one was true? Yep!

It's a bank holiday and I am bored.

"It seems awfully small to be able to do any real damage from so far away," Belle said, eyeing the pennies. "But it would be moving very quickly. I'm not certain."

Belle was certainly not aiming for any people, even pretend people, but she was still going to drop the penny and see what happened.

This was...not at all high. Nope. Bot even a little, just like Troy was definitely...not afraid of heights! Certainly not low-key freaking out over a stupid penny and a very short distance they were dropping it from!

Besides, it was the Danger Shop, so even if he was afraid of heights...

"It's obviously," he said, laughing a little in a very natural, not-scared way, "not even high enough up to count!"

To be honest (and maybe it had something to do with being on ground level again), Troy was kind of disappointed.

"So," he mused, "if the speed was too low....what if we found a way to shoot the penny faster? Like with a gun?"

Because shooting a penny from a normal height wouldn't do any damage, either, obviously.

Well bullets are small and move fast..." Kurt reasoned. "But I don't think the penny will be able to fall fast enough to do anything more than maybe give someone a bruised head? Or maybe a mild concussion? But not enough to kill anyone."

"You wanna challenge the myth next week?" Kitty asked.

"...ye-e-ess?" Troy answered, with no small amount of uncertainty as he looked at Kitty somewhat supiciously, like the question was actually some sort of trap. "But, you know....with guns."

That part, if this wasn't actually a trap, was important.

"Penny guns."

Then he drew in a gasp.

"Quarter guns!" he realized. "'Cuz you said it might also be because the penny's too small!"

See, Kitty, now it couldn't be a trap, because he was demonstrating that he'd paid attention!

Actually, she really liked that train of thought.

"Okay," she said. "I'll see what I can come up with next week."
