The History of the Zora; Monday, Fourth Period [07/26].

Although it would be fair to say that Sidon almost always looked thrilled, a keen eye might observe that he looked particular eager for today's lesson, with a grin that wouldn't quit and a certain bounce to his step.

"Hello!" the big prince greeted his small class brightly. "And welcome back! I think you'll both like this next one, it's one of my favorite bits of Zora history and tradition, although, if we're being completely honest, all of Zora history is my favorite! But today, we'll be talking specifically about the Miracle of the White Scale, so get comfortable, get settled in, and we shall begin!

"You see," Sidon continued, "in the far distant past, t" you know, wherever exactly that might fall on a 10,000 year old history was anyone's guess, really, "there was Zora king who had no talent or heart for the art of war. However, what he lacked in skills with a blade or trident, he made up for it, almost tenfold!, with the love he felt for his people! Especially," and, oh, there was no denying the romantic that lurked there inside of Sidon with the distant smile in his eyes that accompanied his grin!, "the love her felt for his radiant queen! It was unparalleled! And he would most certainly do anything if it meant protecting her and keeping her safe.

"So you can imagine, then, that when rumors of a massive horde of terrifying monsters gathering in the Zodobon Highlands with their spears and their cruel intentions set on Zora's Domain, the king steeled himself for the approaching war to protect his people, despite how ill-suited to the task he was. Worried and distressed for the life of her sovereign and her love, the queen set to the task of making a special armor for the king to wear into battle. So special, in fact, that she took one of her very own scales and wove it into the armor, so that he could carry her love with him into the fray to sheild him against the menacing mob!

"And, as you can imagine, bolstered with such a love, the king led the Zora into the fight, and the tide of success seemed to pull almost certainly in their favor! However, the Lizalfo general of the monster army was cunning and bold, and, seeing an opening in the Zora defenses, he seized," Sidon's arm swung dramatically as if seizing the opening himself with his hand, "the opportunity and forced the Zora army into a devestating corner! Just when the general's sword was about to crash down upon the king, a miracle took place! The clouds overhead had parted from their impending gloom, allowing a beam of sunlight to pierce through, shining onto the Zora King, catching on that special scale that his queen had woven into his armor and blinding his attacker! This was all the opportunity the king needed to finally quell his foe and lead his army into victory!

"This magnificent event in our history came to be known as the Miracle of the White Scale, for the scale that the queen used to enhance her love's protection in such a convenient way was a certain type of white scale that only female Zora possess! And, ever since, there has been a tradition among Zora princesses to craft special scaled armor for their future husbands."

His smile went a little sad, there, as he still found himself unable to decide whether to mention that his own sister had been crafting that special armor herself, before everything happened, but, ultimately, he wouldn't want to shadow such an uplifting story with tragedy, and, really, it all felt a bit too...sacred.

So his smile brightened again, easily, as he turned to his students, who were hopefully just as captivated by the story as he had been every time he'd heard it as a little hatchling growing up.

"So! What do you think of that little tale? And do you have any stories similar, where you're from? Traditions of token of affection, or tales of great romances where the love is so strong, it can turn the tides of war and defy all odds? As always," he chuckled a little, "I should love to hear your thoughts! It wouldn't be much of a class without it, after all!"

Astrid really hoped Sidon didn't mind if she started sketching while he was telling the story, but he really was an enthusiastic storyteller, and it was hard to keep her drawing hand still while he told it. She didn't think it would be a problem, anyway. In fact, she was pretty sure he would be delighted to see her inspired to sketch out the tale while he told it.

And, she figured, it might work as her contribution to class, since she didn't really have much to offer by the way of romantic, brave stories like that. She didn't really buy into the whole concept, so her drawings and maybe a painting later could be compensation for her cynic's perspective.

Belle listened raptly. This was her favorite sort of tale. There was romance and drama and heroics, everything she could want!
