BWI Airport Portalocity Lounge, Saturday morning

Malia had never been out of California before. Or Beacon County, for that matter. She'd barely been out of Beacon Hills proper, and that was mostly as a coyote hunting for food.

So this was new and exciting! Or, you know, new at least. She was going to school. One that didn't, as far as she could tell, require her to learn math. So right there it had one up over BHHS. It also didn't have Scott or Stiles, which was not a point in its favor, but in the end, she'd decided that not having to struggle through eleventh grade math beat out getting to have the few people she knew around, especially when Scott agreed he could try to teach her control over the internet.

So here she was. Her ears still felt stuffed full of cotton from the plane, and the whole airport smelled like cleaning fluid and anxiety, and she was managing to claw tiny holes in the upholstery with claws that didn't want to stay hidden away like they were supposed to, but hey. At least she was having an adventure?

[IT'S NEWBIE SHUTTLE TIME! Up early-ish because work has been dumb this week and I might be slow.]

"Can I?" asked Sakaki, eyes widening to their very limit, but then she stopped, shook her head a little,corrected herself.

"May I?"

Stopped again, shook her head again, but not to correct herself this time, just to marvel at the fact that this was even happening, unless she misunderstood, but, no, 'hang out' was a pretty common phrase, she was pretty sure she had it right!

"Do you think she'd want to?"

"Depends where you're talking about," he shrugged. "England's... normal? Nothing really special there. My last school was in Scotland. That was at least pretty."

And very not normal, but he didn't know that was okay to say yet.

“Normal.” Malia nodded. “I don’t know what that is.”

"It's good to have goals," Harry said. It didn't sound exactly right but be figured security would kick her out anyway.

Well, he'd had a normal time until right this minute.

And now he was kind of wavering between a deer in the headlights and being a little offended at that.

The bus...looked like a bunny.

The bus. That was taking her to her new school. Looked like a bunny!!!.

Sakaki couldn't handle any more. Her hands covered her face and she began trembling from the sheer effort it took to keep all her joy and elation contained inside.

Someone....might need to help the poor girl.

Malia nodded. "That makes sense. Since they're killers and all."

She was definitely going to get classified as the American Orla here, wasn't she.

"Eventually," Anakin said. "First there was a thing with a volcano. It was complicated."

"We've had a few of you come to this school," Anakin explained helpfully. "They don't last long."

That wasn't weirdly foreboding at all.

"I'm applied because they had a special training program with an animal shelter there," said Sakaki, and if she sounded a little skeptical, it was because it all still sounded a little too good to be true. "It should help me get into veterinary school one day..."

"That's fine!" said Sakaki, maybe a little quickly, lest Harry even get even a second to think that it wouldn't be.

She was literally just going to sit there next to Hedwig the whole time with a distant, dazed look on her face, and that would probably be it, anyway.

That would be enough.

Malia nodded. "I helped my alpha get intel on a nogitsune before I came here." A beat. "That's an evil fox demon. So I know how it goes."

Malia nodded slowly. "So . . . like . . . 'Mindy won't stop talking about her tortured soul in group' boring or like 'a day with a good kill you didn't have to fight a cougar for' boring?"

Her experiences were not universal, no.

Malia brightened faintly. "You want to be a vet?"

It was possible she thought all veterinarians were secretly powerful druids, like Dr. Deaton.

Oh, she would definitely get kicked out and not just because Chelsea Clinton hadn't lived there in 20 years.

"I always think so," Clare agreed chirpily. "What brings you to America, Harry?"

As an exchange student. A million fanfics had been written about this.

Sakaki got to hang out with an owl, Anakin! And now she was going to school in a bunny bus!

She had, despite the complete inability to actually move right now, never been more alright!

And just wait until she got inside!

This made ever scratch and bite from the cats that mauled her when she arrived worth it!

But for now, she was trying to get a grip on her composure, breathed out and lowered her hands.

Good. She was good.

"Yes," she said, bowing respectfully...and taking her time because she knew it was just going to hit her again when she straightened and tried to board the bus. "Thank you."
