The class was back in the danger shop again this week, but their scene was very different. It wasn't quite raining, but it looked as though it just had and, at any moment, it may begin again. All around them was dark woods filled with tall, looming pines, and, in fact, it was very clearly nighttime, the only light illuminating the scene were the streetlamps casting a shimmering glow to the rain-slick roads and the dancing red neon sign of the roadhouse behind them. Rosa's hands were shoved into her pockets and she quirked her head toward the fire-escape staircase on the side of the building.
"Two classes left," she said. "Just enough time to squeeze in one extra mystery. A bit grittier than the first one. A murder happened upstairs, in the apartment just above this roadhouse bar, in the wee hours of the night not long after they'd closed for the evening. What we do know is that a man was shot on the landing right outside the apartment door. Everything else is up to you guys to try and figure out for our last class next week. Today, you'll get to investigate the scene and also each of you will receive a clue. Whether you want to share that clue and work with your fellow detectives to figure things out faster is up to you; if you want to try keep your cards close and hold your own, that's fine, too. How you go about this is entirely up to you. With that, come get your clues, and then get investigating.
"And if you have anything to report on last week's assignment," did Rosa expect any of them to even remember she'd given them an assignment? Not really!, "you can share that when you get your clue."
