"Good morning! Or, well, not so good, depending on how you are. People who owe me make-up work, please turn it in.

Beginners, today is the day to go over old notes and see if you have any questions. Your final will cover both the material that Mr. Eppes and I assigned, so ask your questions today!

Intermediate, I'd like a final proposal from you on Monday. Spend today using the computers and text books in the back for research. Your final presentation should be about five minutes in length. If you want to work in pairs, then the time goes up to ten minutes. Have at it!"

Walter sits down at a computer and types in the word fractals (http://math.rice.edu/~lanius/frac/). He then spends much of the rest of the class period dozing with his eyes open.

Molly couldn't think of any questions so she just flipped through what notes she had and prepared to listen to any questions her classmates asked.

Angela plopped down next to Walter. "Hey," she said cautiously. "Did you still want to work together?"

Walter blinked, indicating that he was no longer asleep with his eyes open. He wasn't exactly awake with his eyes open yet, either, though.

"Um. Yeah. Sure." He pointed at the screen. "They make cool pictures?"

Angela let her eyes focus on the screen for a moment. "They do," she acknowledged. "I guess we could program a sequence that would make snowflakes, or something," she suggested tentatively.

"You'll be carrying me for a lot of that," Walter admitted, making a face. "My first experience with a computer was when I got here. But I can help with the math."

Angela made a face. "I'm not great with computers either," she admitted. "I can check my email or type a paper, but that's about it."

"Do you know how to do fractals with pen and paper?," she asked.

"I found some instructions for how to do it. It doesn't look so bad. Knowing the way everyone around here loves glitter, we can probably use a bunch of glitter, too."

Angela had to smile at that. "I like the way you think," she said. "I probably even have some glitter in my room from a project I was doing." She does not say the project was scrapbooking, of course. That might be misconstrued.

"Perfect. I don't think it will be too hard to work out a proposal to give to Broots. Can you bring your supplies on Monday so we can work on it?" He'd even make an effort to get some sleep before class.
