"Congratulations!" said Amaya by way of greeting the class that morning, with a big of a grin on her face as she gave an encouraging pump of her fist. They were still sub-terranian, it seemed, rock surrounding them and sputtering torches on the walls leading their way. "You've successfully managed to free yourself from goblin imprisonment, and we've been making our way through their labyrinthian tunnels on our way back to the surface. And we're almost there! In fact, if you'll just turn this next corner with me..."

She lead them forward to do just that, which opened the scene into a larger cavern with an opening on the other side that clearly sported stone stairs going upward...but a wide, deep, almost fathomless ravine seemed to split the chamber right down the middle.

On either side of them were two wooden structures that appeared to be bases for catapults, and there were quite a few heaps of rubble, timber, stones and....mattresses scattered around. And, glowering at them from inside the ravine was a very large, very surly looking bridge troll.

"It would seem the only thing seperating us from freedom now is this here bridge troll, and he seems to be in a rotten mood. Luckily, it appears we might be able to do somehting here with these two structures so conveniently there for us to use, and goblins are notorious hoarders, so there's guaranteed to be something of use in these old piles of junk, right?"

She flashed them a grin. "I think you can see where this might be going from here. We're going to split up into two groups, and I want you all to try to find a way to defeat this bridge troll....or at least give him a good run for his money!....so that we can cross the ravine and finally get out of this goblin mess! Feel free to use any of the junk you find in the goblin hoards, though, fair warning, the likelihood of anything useful in there is few and far between, but that's the whole point of the class, isn't it?

"Alright, then, now! As for teams..."

With alternating between teams one and two!

Get a feel for the space, the goal, and the nasty troll, and ask questions if you've got them! Unfortunately, though, if that question is why are there so many mattresses??, you're out of luck.

Even if Amaya did design the thing, she couldn't tell you why all the mattresses, all she knew was that goblins had a real mattress problem.

There's a good solid start with these catapult bases aimed oh-so-conveniently at the troll, but where else can you take these handy weapons? Basic rubble and materials (and mattresses) can be found in the piles, but randomization reveals that the following characters may find any of the following items in their piles if they choose:

Lana: a book of fairy tales, a broken laptop, a palette of watercolor paints
Freya: a silk floral bouquet, a violin, a large paintbrush
Julius: a novelty coffee mug, a pair of old jeans, a sandwich-sized tupperware container
Juillenne: a bunch of votive candles, an elegant jade carving of a birdcage, a pair of scissors
Shuri: a microphone, a digital camera, a large ring with a gaudy blue gem
Grog: a black domino mask, a pair of white high heeled shoes, an adorable but battered teddy bear
Sabine: a book of musical scores, a DJ sound board, and a Santa Claus Christmas ornament

Items found do not have to be used, but it's encouraged, and basic things like wood and rocks and mattresses are readily available, too. Good luck!

And once you've maybe got something planned to be catapulted, give it a test and see how you fare against the surly troll!

Who will assure you that attacking trolls is far more effective than trying to talk them out of it, unless you wanted to find yourself spending weeks in negotiations. They definitely did not have the time for that!

If we're going by pure item drops alone, I think Grog wins hands down.

Freya Crescent, team one

By the time Feeya had rummage enough to find a third relatively useless item, she frowned a little as she tried to consider how any of them could be useful as a weapon against such a foe, especially when paired with a catapult.

"I suppose one could distract him with terrible violin music to enhance whatever we do come up with," she offered, since her skills did come in handy on the supportive side as well as the offensive.

Juillenne Milone (and Camden), team two

Shuri, team one

"And take their picture as they wince," Shuri said, holding up her camera. "We have an ugly blue thing, too," said, showing off the blue gem, "but we can really only shoot that once."

"Perhaps if we could somehow calibrate the catapult in a way to ensure that we manage to aim that gem into its eye?" Freya mused, considering the difficulty of such a task. "I wonder if the strings of the violin might help with something like that, although it does seem a shame to destroy such a beautiful instrument."

"I have a microphone, too," Shuri said. "I'm sure we can take it apart for the wiring."

Julius ~~Heartstriker~~ Quetz, team two

Oh no.

"Uh. Hi Jules," Julius said, inching over to where his team was meeting.

He still didn't know what the heck had been wrong with him on Saturday, but, thankfully, he was back to feeling fraternal towards her.

And, you know. Humiliated.

"Julius," she nodded. "We never did meet up after the dating event," she pointed out. And, okay, while she hadn't been temporarily in love with him, he was her friend and she had been looking forward to comparing notes!

... And possibly asking him what the hell had been up with that odd behavior.

"Oh, yeah," Julius said, giving her an awkward smile. "I had to go home right after that. I, err. Wasn't feeling well."

...In a manner of speaking.

“Hmmm.”

Did you hear that, Julius? That was the sound of someone who believed you like zero percent. “I see.”

Someone who was also carefully cataloging every weird Julius-reaction to things after a certain conversation last week. Though she was fairly certain this behavior had less to do with that and more to do with whatever had come over him at the dating event.

Lana Beniko, team one

"I have a laptop," Lana added. "It doesn't work, but the circuitry might be good."

"Uh yeah," Julius said, giving her a sheepish smile. "You know. A lot of. It was all pretty new? I don't even know what happened, I ducked my head in and the guy behind the bar told me I'd signed up. So it was all very weird."

The whole thing! Not just him!

Okay, that was all-

That was all very true, but Juillenne could not shake the feeling that one Julius Quetz was an absolute lying liar who lied.

(For one thing, his name on the records was definitely Heartstriker, yet he had introduced himself as 'Quetz', which led credence to Nina's 'disgraced royal' theory. Though surely by now he'd figured out no one had any idea who his family was?)

"Yes," Juillenne nodded with the sage wisdom of someone who'd been here over a year now. "That happens rather a lot, you'll find."

Honestly, his mother would probably be proud of all the lying lies he was 'successfully' pulling off.

For various definitions of 'successfully' and 'pulling off,' mind.

"It might happen again?!" he asked, eyes wide.

It was literally only because you were so nice that people weren't ambushing you with a list of all those lies and demanding an explanation, Julius.

"Oh, that's right," Juillenne nodded. "You missed most of the summer and the camp activities. That's a prime example right there."

And possibly because they hadn't yet all compared notes to discover how many lies he'd told!

"Oh," he said, dismayed. "But they're not all...like that, right?"

Oh, they were working on that, Julius, don't you worry.

"Not always," she conceded.
