In Space No One Can Give You Chocolate and Other Problems Solved By Cupcakes (Thursday May 14)

Cupcake class was meeting in the Home Ec room as it had ~~so many~~ years ago. Where else would you hold a class on cupcakes? Besides, perhaps at Jeff, God of Biscuits but field trips were for later. Definitely not for the first day.

At the front of the room was an array of unfrosted cupcakes (not muffins!) in various flavors. There were also small containers of frosting, some food coloring, and an assortment of sprinkles and small candies.

Behind the food was an alien, smiling only somewhat nervously at the class. It had been a long time since he did anything like this. “Welcome to ‘In Space No One Can Give You Chocolate and Other Problems Solved by Cupcakes',” Stark said. “I’m Stark.” Hopefully they’d all figured that out by how he was at the front of the room and was listed as the teacher, but you never knew. This was Fandom and the odds were high that someone might be in the class without having signed up for it.

“Today I thought we would start with something easy. Not really solving any problems today. Unless you’re hungry. That one we can solve. Or you need a cupcake. Something fun. Something you can eat without having to wait for it to bake and cool. So,” he waved his hand at the things in front of him. “We will decorate.” He paused. “And eat, if you want.” If you didn’t want to eat cupcakes he wasn’t really sure why you would be here but he would try his best not to judge. Much.

"So, grab some supplies. Introduce yourselves, if you like. And enjoy."

[It has been YEARS since I made a post ~~bear with me while I slowly put up OCD~~ oh man this is weird, friends]

“Liam Kincaid-Price,” he introduced himself. “Cake in all forms solves a number of problems in my house, so I’m looking forward to learning about cupcake-specific solutions,” he said.

It’s possible some of the mice might end up accompanying him to this workshop once they learned of it!

Elli

"I'm Elli," she said, a bit shyly.

Between cupcakes and puppies, though, this day was going really well for her!

"I've never really thought of what problems cupcakes could solve," she admitted. "But they're tasty?"

Elli would be the first to admit that it was for the best that decorating was all she had to do today.

She carefully frosted her cupcake with vanilla (it was best to start with a plain canvas!) before studying the rest of the decorations. Perhaps she'd decorate a cupcake for her school-assigned sibling?

Oh, but she wasn't really sure what Astrid would like...

Shuri

"I'm Shuri," Shuri said, "and I'm just excited that this class seems to be a fairly normal approach to food."

Shuri had been in Summer's weird 1950s class last year and now also in Nina's brain-breaking cooking class. Cupcakes that looked like cupcakes were wonderful.

Shuri was using many, MANY sprinkles. More was more, after all.

Shockingly, Liam went right for the cream cheese icing to start.

What? Sometimes the mice liked their "cheese and cake" all at once!

He was, for the record, also making sure that he had a cupcake or two for Verity. All in all he was decorating uh... kind of a lot of cupcakes. But at least they weren't all for him??

Mae Borowski

"Mae Borowski," Mae said. "Cupcakes are delicious and also extremely throwable. I approve."

Throwability of food was important. For . . . Reasons.

Could Stark take someone managing to create the ugliest cupcake ever? Because Mae was well on her way to the ugliest cupcake, ever. It would taste perfectly good, but that was not how colors were supposed to work. How had she managed to make the frosting look like something growing on a log?

She seemed to be having fun at least, so hey, there was that!

Karolina Dean

"I'm Karolina, and I'm the guidance counselor," Karolina said brightly. That second part felt kind of weird to say in this context, but also she should probably introduce herself to fellow faculty, so there it was. "And I just... really like cupcakes."

A beat, then her smiled turned a smidge sheepisj.

"Oh, but I kinda have to ask, and I probably should've done it when I signed up, but -- are we going to have vegan options?"

Astrid Magnussen

Summer Smith

"Hiiii, everyone!"

Was it still weird being in someone else's cooking class again?

Oh, yeah, it was super weird, but Summer kind of loved it? Like, what. the. hell? When did she start actually enjoying shit like classes.

"I'm Summer, and I promise, I am not thinking about jello cupcakes right now."

LIES. ALL LIES. There were totally jello cupcakes in her near future, trust.

Yeah, if you didn't think Summer's cupcake wasn't just covered in all the pink sprinkles she could find, you obviously didn't know Summer.

Forget the fish, though, Stark; just be glad she wasn't asking if there were any flies to add.

Astrid had to admit, this was kind of nice, just something about cupcakes, though the whole 'solving problems' aspects of it was making her a little wary. Guess only time would tell. Nothing like Fandom to keep you on your toes, she supposed.

But for now, she's just enjoy the simplicity of it.

"I'm Astrid," she offered. "I don't think you can really go wrong with cupcakes, right?"

Please don't prove her wrong. Please.

It was just a cupcake, sure, but a cupcake could be a canvas, and so Astrid was taking great care to decorate her cupcake as if it were a painting, chosing the colors for the icing and the details with sprinkles and other little candies until she created a nice floral motif on hers that, even she had to admit, wound up almost too pretty to want to eat.

She didn't do it show off, though, she just did it to see if she could, and was just quietly pleased with the results.

"You often solve problems with baked goods at home?" A man after his own heart! And, let's be honest, Stark would be thoroughly enchanted by the mice.

"Hello, Elli."

"Mostly they solve hunger problems, or a need for sugar," Stark confided. "But not always. And they are tasty! Usually. Sometimes...they're terrible. Hopefully no terrible ones here. Not for this workshop."

"Hello, Shuri."

"What other approaches to food have you had in classes?" He's been gone a while. He has no idea. Be gentle.

Larceny

"I am Larceny," she said, with frosting already smeared across her mouth. "I like noodles and cakes! Even cakes the size of cups!"

Sorry to break your heart, Stark. But Larceny was doing her best to draw an octopus on her cupcakes. Plural.

To make up for all the little baby octopuses they had tried to make her eat yesterday.

"They are throwable, Mae." Stark had used stale cupcakes as projectiles in the past. "Fit nicely in the hand."

“And make a satisfying splat when they hit!”

"I usually only throw stale ones," Stark admitted. "Too hard to splat. Sometimes there is a nice thunk."

Mae nodded thoughtfully. “Thinks are also good.”

"I..." Stark looked briefly stricken. "I apologize. I didn't consider. I should have. Yes. I will make sure of it. I'm sorry."

Well now Stark was thinking of Jello cupcakes.

"Jello shaped like cupcakes? Cupcakes made with Jello? Jello that tastes like cupcakes? Cupcakes that taste like Jello?"

Such enthusiasm!

"Noodles on cupcakes?" Stark asked warily.

Shuri inclined her head towards Summer. "She does very strange things with food."

"...I have never put them together before," Larceny said dubiously. "I did not think they were friends."

Liam nodded. "I live with several dozen mice," he explained. Well, 'explained'. "'Cheese and cake' is the usual offering if there's something specific I need from them."

"Astrid," Stark said seriously, "sometimes people go very wrong with cupcakes. But not in here." He hoped. He really, really hoped.

Oh no. He hoped he hadn't given her any ideas.

"I haven't either," Stark assured her. "I don't think they are friends. But both are delicious. Just...not together."

"Mice-sized mice?" Stark asked. "Or bigger?" He was trying to picture how many cakes might be needed for dozens of mice of varying sizes.

"Mice-sized mice," Liam informed him. The answer was 'a lot', Stark. Though strangely enough, to hear Verity tell it, there had been a sharp uptick in the amount of cheese and cake required that more or less aligned with when Liam had started to spend a significant amount of time staying over.

"Should I be concerned, do you think?"

He'd be very careful about available ingredients if he needed to be.

"If you need extras for your mice we should have plenty." It wasn't like he was going to be unprepared when it came to baked goods. There were always more cupcakes to be had. That was one of his favorite things about Fandom.

Nell Ingram

"I'm Nell Ingram," she said, "And I'm looking forward to making cupcakes and such-like."
