Advanced Bird Haberdashery, Wednesday, period 2
You could hear Duke's classroom from the other end of the hallway. You could smell it, too. The bird of the week let out a squawking croak that made it sound more like it should be a frog than a bird, and had a smell that had earned it the nickname "skunkbird". They flounced gracelessly from desk to desk, trying to eat anything vaguely leaf-like they could find.
Including the instructions for the weekly hat making.
"Right," Duke said, looking at the shredded paper with an expression of vague despair. "So this week we've got the hoatzin. Not sure who decided that frill needed to be squashed by a hat, but here we are. Considering the, uh, odiferous nature of our guests this week — and the fact that they ate the hat patterns — I'm going to say we're taking it easy this week, and making the simplest hat known to man, outside of just sticking a bowl on its head: a beanie. So . . . a bowl made out of yarn or fabric. You're going to have to figure out how yourselves, though." One of the birds landed right in front of him, and he gagged faintly. "Good luck, and try to breathe through your mouth or something."
