Shop CLass; Friday, First Period [01/17].

"Morning, everyone!" Amaya greeted the class with the usual nod, the usual how-is-she-this-chipper-this-early brightness, and the usual gesture toward the coffee table. "If you're in need of some pep for the day, please help yourself, we're going to be starting with learning some equipment today, and less sleepiness usally means less fingerlessness! We'll be working with wood today, and the jigsaw, which is a tool we'll likely use a lot in this class. Now, I know some of you have already used this equipment before, but a refresher never hurt anyone. As a matter of fact, if anything does hurt, then that's a good sign you needed the refresher more than you realized!

"As mentioned last week, you'll definitely be wanting to be wearing your gloves and goggles for this," and, as a matter of point, she moved her goggles down from her head to her face, and she'd already been wearing her gloves, and then moved over to the equipment, gesutring the kids to come along with her to get a good look as she demonstrated. "Now, the jigsaw is a pretty simple, straightforward piece of equipment, easy to use and easy to pick up on, as long as you pay attention to what you're doing, so I don't imagine too many of you will have many problems with it.

"I'll show you," she said, turning on the equipment and easily able to shout instructions and explanation over the whirring blades and slicing wood as she carved a wooden sword (of course!) out of the piece of wood she was working with.

"We've got both hand jigsaws and table mounted ones; the first will give you a little more freedom, but the second is a bit more controled. Feel free to use whichever you're more comfortable with, and if you're a little squeemish about either, let me know, and I'll walk you through it. Since this particular class is about getting to know how to use and familiarize yourself with the jigsaws, feel free to use the class time to cut a few things or make a few things if you're inspired, but, if you need some guidance, I've got a few project ideas you can use and see what you can come up with by the end of class.

"Any questions?" She grinned a little as she looked them over to see if there were any, always excited for this class even though she'd been teaching it for practically ever, but who didn't love a room filled with dangerous spinning blades and clouds of wooddust and the potential for bodily harm? "Alright, then!" She pounded her fist into her palm. "Let's get to work!"

Memory was such a funny thing. Astrid hadn't thought back to Tujunga, to Starr and Uncle Ray, but the smell of fresh cut wood, the buzz of a jigsaw, immediately called up that scent that clung to Ray like an aftershave. And now those memories that had slipped deep down below came bubbling up, sitting on a porch swing, Starr's sharp and accusing looks...

Then Astrid realized she was distracted, not paying attention to what Ms. Blackstone was saying, and tried to hone her focus back in, especially since she hadn't worked with equipment like this before, so she'd better know how to be careful. Especially since she'd never worked much with wood, as a medium, and it would be nice to expand into something else for a change.

Astrid took a while, trying to figure out what she wanted to make. Dawdling, really, taking her time inspecting all the different woods, feeling them, as if trying to find inspiration in their lines and knots. Until finally, she had it, an idea, and then she lingered a little longer as if deciding if that was something she really wanted to do, and then she began.

She started with just one, carefully cutting out a shape in the wood, a teardrop, slightly bigger than her hand. And then she used that one as a stencil to mark more on the wood, and got to work cutting those out as well.

Twenty-seven of them, to be exact. She planned to paint each one a different shade of blue.
