The Art of Pacifism; Monday, Second Period [01/13].

When the students arrived in the classroom for their lesson, they would find all the desks shoved aside to make room for a variety of cushions and pillows set in a loose circle at the center of the room, and their instructor, all flowing robes and slightly battered straw hat, already sitting there in the circle quite comfortably, pouring himself some hot cocoa...and maybe looking a little sleepy, though he was trying his very best to power through that right now; this was just a bit early for him. But, sleepy as he may be, he greeted each student brightly and enthusiastically as they entered, with varying degrees of "Come in, come in ♥! Have a seat ♥! And some cocoa, while we wait for the others ♥!" until it looked like they were ready to begin.

"Well ♥!" he said, beaming at the small collected group of students and echoing the narrative, "it looks like we're ready to begin ♥! Welcome to the Art of Pacifism, ducklings ♥! In this class, we’ll be discussing ways to live the path of the nonviolent and the peaceful for a life filled with happiness ♥. I am your teacher, Captain Shunsui Kyōraku ♥, though feel free to call me whatever you like. If you insist on being formal, though, I prefer Kyōraku-san or Taichō, Captain. Sensei just gives the impression that I actually know what I'm doing ♥.

"Now," he continued, "typically, I would start this class with a lesson about the most crucial and key element of pacifism and love, which is patience, but I believe, in light of recent events, it might make sense to be a bit more...thematic. After all, tying in with the importance of patience and the ability to not simply rush in to the most obvious solution of violence, is knowing when you truly have no other choice but to fight.

"As I'm sure--as I hope!--you're all aware, class was canceled last week due to Fandom having herself one of her lovely little invasions, one where many of our fair citizens," and, for a moment, briefly, subtly, his eyes passed around the circle, because he'd done his research and known that one of his students had actually been among the kidnapped, but he didn't know which it was, "as well as some unsuspecting new faces, were abducted and forced into some volcano while the rest of us were left scrambling to figure out exactly what to do. And a great many thihngs were tried, most of them peaceful, since there was no direct enemy in sight and there really weren't many choices. I have since learned that there was also a more non-violent attempt on the part of those captured to say their captor through the art of seduction ♥." Excuse him a moment, he would never not appreciate this part of the story. "Unfortunately, both the ritual of peaceas well as the dance of love proved ineffectual, although it allowed our brave rescuers to break into the abysmal prison and fight to free those captured.

"So it would seem...." he continued, dragging that point out just a bit, "that violence and war was the solution in this very recent example. I, myself, am just coming back from a....situation ♥," he waved his hand as if to dismiss the seriousness of it, "back home where we were left with no choice but to fight. So while I feel the very first and most important lesson of pacifisim is patience, I will not deny that another very important part is knowing where to draw the line.

"After all," his face broke out into a crooked, lazy smile, "I also hear that those captured attempted a violent coup of their own, which resulted in the bulk of them being strung out over a lava pit. Perhaps I am just a bit old-fashioned, but I would certainly consider that as making a situation much worse ♥.

"So here is what I expect from you today, my ducklings, and, please, help yourself to more cocoa if you desire, there is plenty ♥! But we will be doing the standard introductions, because we shall get to know each other very well in this class, I hope ♥! I'd like to know who you are and, most importantly, where you think you draw the line. At one point does a fight become inevitable? Is a fight always inevitable? If you were involved with any of the nonsense of the previous week, where did you stand on the efforts to fight our way through it? Was there ever a situation where you chose a non-violent solution over a violent one? Or vice-versa? Why did you choose one over the other? There are a great many questions we can cover, though we only have so much time, but the nice thing is...we've got plenty more weeks ahead of us, neh ♥? Don't be shy, whoever would like to speak up first, please do ♥! And don't be afraid to discuss amongst yourselves, either ♥. This is all we have on the agenda for today, so we might as well enjoy it with each other's company and some insightful discussions ♥.

"Now ♥!" Shunsui beamed at them all again. "Who shall have the honors of starting us out ♥?"

Mae sprawled over her pillow, limbs akimbo, cuddling her cup of cocoa.

She'd have loved to drift off. But she was all too aware of just why her parents had insisted on her signing up for this class when they saw it was available, and considering they hadn't just kicked her out after the Incident, she figured she owed it to them to pay attention.

She owed it to herself maybe a little, too.

"I'm Mae," Mae said, giving a little wave when it was her turn. "Um. I beat up toys with sticks, last week. But only after the singing thing. The singing thing was kind of fun, I was disappointed that it didn't work." That was a lie. "But after this summer beating up toys with sticks was really fun. Toys are creepy. We should all just play with feral animals in the woods like God intended. . . ."

Astrid was sort of glad she had a class before this one, to sort of loosen her up a little, in a manner of speaking, though if they were anything to go off of so far, it seemed like Mondays were going to be pretty quiet and introspective for her. She found a cushion that she chose more for aesthetics than comfort, folded too-long legs in front of her, and curled around the mug of hot cocoa she'd gotten, the one she'd spend most of the class staring into with the occasional moment to have a sip.

And maybe, every once in a while, looking around just a little bit, to her classmates, while the instructor talked about what happened last week, knowing with confidence that she was the one his eyes had very briefly been looking for.

Astrid was quiet through most of this class, through the lecture, through the introductions and subsequent discussions, until there was a lull in the conversation and she'd discovered she had no more cocoa left in her cup to sip. So she looked down into the cup, empty but for that small little bit you could never quite completely get, and then looked up.

There was a time, which seemed like ages ago, when she first got here, and she felt she could get away with just skipping the introductions if she made herself invisibile. And she was pretty sure she might be able to get away with it in this class, despite the fact that the topic made her feel the exact opposite of invivible. But maybe that's what it was, the fact that it was better to be seen and make your own mark than to be seen and let other make assumptions, that convinced her to finally speak.

"I'm Astrid," she said. "I was one of the ones in the volcano, but I didn't get strung up over the pit because I mostly just avoided everything and waited for it to all be over. I like to think I would have fought, if I had to, but I still hadn't gotten to that line."

She honestly wasn't sure she ever had crossed that line before, and was wondering if she ever would, if there had been various times when she should have. Gingerly, she touched the side of her face a little, knowing the bruises were gone by now, but half wondering if she could still feel them, if they'd have been worse if she tried to fight back.

"...I was in Japan and I didn't know anything happened," Okuyasu said, looking a little shell-shocked. "I'm Okuyasu Nijimura and I usually punch things to solve them. Usually seems to work, if I'm honest."

"Um," said Mae. Because she was really sure he was hoping for one answer, and the other one was the actual truth.

Though she'd never heard anyone manage to say 'beat up things with sticks' with such a loving tone, before.

". . . I don't want to immediately fail this class."

So, this was what happened when you couldn't read the course offerings, and told a moose to pick your classes for you.

"Um. I'm Grog," he said. "I fought some of the toys last week. I've fought lots of things, and sometimes that probably wasn't so nice, but like the things that were here, they were going to hurt people if someone didn't smash them, right?"

He was so going to fail this class.

"You mean talking about it without fighting?" Grog asked. His face clearly showed how well that idea sat with him. "I'm not really good at that. I'm more for when all the talking didn't work and everyone's just ready to punch each other instead."
