"Alibis," Lucifer announced, writing the word on the blackboard with a swirl. "Every criminal has one. As do most innocent people, as well. But how do you pierce an iron-clad alibi? How do you find the right... questions?"

He paused.

"Two of you are criminals," he said. "You've stolen an important piece of jewelry from the local bank. You will retreat from this classroom to talk for five minutes. Your alibi must involve three places you've visited and two activities you've been involved in. You will return to this class one at a time, for ten minutes each."

He pointed at two students, then pointed helpfully at the door. "Out," he said, and waited for them to leave. "As for the rest of you, your job is to catch them in a lie. You've got ten minutes to question either of them. I expect results."

He hit the blackboard with his charcoal once, for emphasis, then beamed. "This will be fun."

"Let's say it was my tea for helping people relax. Chamomile and some special flowers I'm growing." Nell smiled at her. "I can give you some if you want."

Tip shrugged. "They probably won't get that into details, but sure, if you have any on you. So that's one place and activity. We need a couple more. I have Library duty on Mondays, we could do that one, too?"

"Which would get us talking about teas, and then we could go to the flower shop," Tip said. "Okay, we need one more place, I think. Also, I'm really hoping the pretend crime we're pretend guilty of doesn't involve, like flower-based tea poisons."

"That would be bad," Nell agreed. "Maybe after the flower shop we could go to The Perk and get a cup of coffee? That seems like a natural thing."

"If we were drinking calming tea at the flower shop, why would we get caffeinated coffee right after?" Tip asked. "I mean, I'm not saying we couldn't, it just sounds like the sort of thing they'd pounce on in a crime show."

"Oh, I see," Nell said, blushing. "I was thinking we'd stop by the flower shop so I could give you a sample of my tea. Like for before bed or something. But we can go somewhere else after."

"Oh! Yeah, that could work. And that way if they ask what the tea tasted like, I could just be like 'I don't know, I haven't tried it yet'." Tip nodded. "Okay, coffee after it is. What did we both order? I'd get . . . a small mocha. And they'd put peppermint in it by mistake."

"I'd just get a regular small coffee with lots of cream and sugar," Nell said. "I'm pretty plain."

"That's what you'd order," Tip said. "Did they get it right? The Perk is notorious for screwing up people's orders. Would you say if you didn't get the right thing?"

"Huh... I guess them'uns could have given me hot chocolate instead." Nell had never been to The Perk to actually buy anything before, so she hadn't known they mixed things up. "Would that work?"

"Sure. I think the trick would be not to volunteer any extra detail, but if we work it out in advance and they're all 'but what did you all ORDER?' we can still have our stories straight."

Nell nodded. "Yep. Learned me real early that you don't give the government any information you don't need to."

“Or, like, any adult,” Tip agreed. “Is the government usually looking for information on you?”

"God's Cloud of Glory church don't want the government poking around trying to take away their rights and their guns and such," Nell said. "We'uns are all brought up to keep 'em out any way we can."

“Ah.” Tip resisted the urge to step back. White religious extremists didn’t historically much like people like her, but Nell was in Fandom, so she was probably okay. “That would do it, I guess.”

"From what I've heard about groups like that, definitely not," Tip agreed. "I mean, everyone's got their assholes, but some groups seem to have, uh, more than others. You know?"
