Journalism 101/201 (Wednesday, March 29 - 5th period)

"Hello," Rita said, looking a bit irritable. There was a faint 'D (Dreadful)' scrawled across her face in red. "You were all told to pick a writing style you like. What did you choose? Who are you choosing to model your writing after? And so on. Share."

"That boy" signed in.

Anakin signed in.

"I like a pretty spare writing style," Anakin said. "Not a lot of embellishments or extraneous words." He made a face, thinking back to his time in the Jedi Archives over winter break. "Say what needs to be said as quickly and concisely as possible. Don't take ten pages to explain something that could be covered in a paragraph."

He thought to the books he had seen in Rory's room. "More Steinbeck, less Hemingway," he tried, thinking that explaining it in terms of writers from his home galaxy wouldn't help anyone at all.

"I actually found a couple of your articles, Professor," That Boy said. Well, he'd lucked into having them sent to him. Whatever. "They were good reads. Crisp sentences that really seemed to bite, you know? Interesting subject matter, creative wordplay, fantastical descriptions... I honestly believe that if I follow your style, my writing can grow into a monster. You know, the good kind. Not a bad monster or anything."

He smiled earnestly.

Quinn signs in.

"I like styles like Brianne James' Diary," she says. "But it's kinda hard to make it work, you know?" Quinn says.

"Which articles?" Rita asked, pleased.

Poor, oblivious Rita.

"I have no idea what you're talking about," Rita says seriously.

"Haven't the faintest idea what a Steinback or Hemmyway is," Rita said. "But that's a good policy. In journalistic writing, we try to cut back on the flowery language. There's a cap put on word count for most articles, since it does have to actually fit in a small space. Good work, Mr. Skywalker."

"It's a book, with this girl who's all neurotic and not really popular and she's kind of a loser a lot of the time, but she gets all the hot guys pining for her, so it works out. Which is really unfair if you ask me, but the book's kind of funny."

Yes, Quinn can read.

Anakin gave Professor Skeeter a faint smile. "Thank you, Professor."

Peter wasn't giving anything up this early. He received the e-mail thirdhand. That means that there were probably a few people who could also use it against her.

"I don't remember the titles, but they were from The Daily Prophet." He vaguely recalled something from the lecture on headlines, so he tried to give some vague detail. "They were about mistakes made by... oh, I can't remember his name. The head of another school. It was a good exposé."

"Ah, yes," Rita said with a proud smile. "Good work...you."

"Thank you," Peter said.

Peter was sure he'd end up paying for this eventually, but the next assignment was probably going to be FUN.

Rose signs in.

"Oh, I love that one! Had tears running down my face was laughing so hard." smiles Rose.

"Oh my god, I know. Which guy did you want her to end up with? I liked the one at work. He was dreamy in the movie."

Rose laughs and says, "Oh, no! He was horrid! Such a bastard. I loved the other one, Matt Dercy. Mmm..."

"You can have him, then," Quinn nods. "It works out."

"Fantastic!"
