Student Council, Lunchtime, Friday

Since it was the first meeting of the year, Zoe had gone slightly overboard on food. There was pizza, salad, a variety of sodas, flavored waters, and coffee, and cookies, so many cookies.

"Hello everyone. Thank you all for volunteering, or re-volunteering for the council," she said, with a smile to the familiar faces. "This will likely be another year of planning events and dodging around whatever the island decides to throw at us, but it'll be good experience for whatever you all plan to do after school."

"We have two orders of business today. First, we have to elect a president from the seniors, and then we need to discuss ways to entertain the people who come to visit during Parents Weekend in a few weeks."

Once the voting was over, Zoe looked to the newer students. "In a little while, we're going to invite everyone's friends and family to come and visit for the last weekend in September," she explained. "Usually, we do something on Saturday to give everyone an excuse for family bonding time, we just need to decide what we want to do this year. If you're worried about who might come to see you, this is your warning to prepare yourself for a visit."

Sidon had felt...oddly thrilled when his name was announced yesterday. He didn't know much about the student council, but he did know it would likely be useful for him to be a part of a little government within the school, to work with other people and get just a little bit of an experience that previous kings did not to help him do his job the best that he possibly could.

And he certainly meant it when he said on the form that he wanted to be a good representative for non-human students, which, it would seem, would indeed be needed.

Of course, the pizza certainly helped him to maintain his excitement as well.

Astrid had really, really hoped that her form would have wound up lost or that anyone else in her class would have gone for this, but nope. That would have been hoping that things actually worked out for her for a change, where she could get her case worker off her back for having at least tried without having to deal with any of the consequences. But at least they'd be happy now. Look at her. Practically a model student, right?

Well. At least there was pizza.

Sabine knew most of the people here, and she honestly only signed up because art shouldn't only be glitter, what had you people been doing till now, so this was a chill, no pressure kind of thing for her.

And she knew to never turn down free pizza.

Hey, Norman had at least a passing knowledge of most of the people on the Student Council, himself. He smiled a bit as he made his way in, helped himself to some pizza, soda, and a handful of cookies, and made himself comfortable.

... A nervous sort of comfortable. He'd never done anything quite like this before.

So what Zoe was saying ~~in a voice distressingly close to someone she was not a fan of right now~~ was that next weekend was going to be a bad one for Sabine.

Not that she was letting on about that at all. "What kinds of things have we done for this before?" she wondered.

"I wouldn't have figured this would be your kind of thing," Sabine admitted.

Astrid's face answered well before her words did, and that heavy sigh said an awful lot, too.

"It's not," she readily admitted. "It's--"

She looked like she was almost going to go into a complaint there, stopped herself, seemed to force her train of thought to switch tracks. "It was...implied that I should make an effort to be more involved in student activities. It didn't seem to matter that there aren't exactly a whole lot of student activities, and, honestly, I sort of figured at least someone else would have went for it, too, and I'd be out by merit instead of in by default."

"Sorry," Sabine said, not unsympathetically. "At least you know most of the people here, so that's hot to make it easier, right?"

"No," said Astrid, her tone almost apologetic now. "It does help."

Especially since she liked most of them, too. And she knew them well enough to figure she could probably just ride on their coattails, as long as she managed to avoid Paris's attention. Maybe she could just hide behind Sidon most meetings.

"To be fair," she added, "I don't think I'd have pegged you for a Student Council type, either."

She was on the fence about it; she still remembered how much Sabine talked about getting out of here when they first arrived, but on the other hand, she had put together that trip to the capitol, so...

"If the decorations were going to be all glitter every time I would have slowly gone crazy so I decided to be proactive," Sabine shrugged.

Her reasons were selfish and artistic.

Selfish and artistic, and Astrid approved.

"What've you got against glitter on every single surface at every single event, Sabine?" she asked, oh-so-innocently.

"I'm just saying, don't just pile it on everything. Let the glitter mean something," she said. "Or at least let me set off a glitter bomb to decorate."

"That would add a nice dramatic decorative element to whatever the event may be," Astrid said, which meant that Sabine could at least count on her vote for as many glitter bombs as Sabine saw fit. And probably pretty much anything else she'd suggest.

"Thank you. Even though I'm not sure what any of the events would be," she admitted.

It was weird to realize, in that moment, that this was a subject that Astrid would know so much more about than Sabine.

"Probably just school dances and things like that," she offered. "Student council, at least at my old schools, would do that and pep rallies and job fairs, I think. I never really paid much attention and this school is...different, anyway."

"Dances?" she repeated. "My last school definitely didn't have those."

Strangely, the Imperial Academy, what with the weapon building and all, didn't really have a homecoming.

"I mean, I guess it's possible this school won't have them, either," Astrid shrugged. "But I always got the feeling that's mostly what student councils did."

"I feel like it'd be interesting," she said, and even she didn't know if that was praise or not.

Which made it even more difficult for Astrid to try to discern which direction Sabine was coming from there. Her head tilted a little as she sipped her soda before asking, "What was your last school like, anyway?"

She'd been vague about that so far so she wasn't sure how to explain it to someone who didn't already have some kind of context. And then she realized it was actually easy.

"Military school," she said. "Not much fun around there."

It...did seem to fill in a few blanks neatly if one was open to some vague interpretations of their own.

"I can see a little bit why you might have changed your mind about getting out of here as soon as possible. Or at least made it less of a focus."

Congratulations, Astrid, you were getting more of Sabine's backstory than anyone so far!

"I hadn't been back to that school for a while before that. Long story,," she admitted, and shrugged. "But I'm apparently okay enough with this place to sign up for Student Council."

...That more backstory wasn't much.

Wasn't much was still something, and Astrid would have been satisfied with less, really, as she'd hate to have to return the favor.

"Apparently," Astrid said with a small smile. "Well, if I'm going to be stuck doing it, I'm glad you signed up for it, too."

"I would make a great Student Council President," Paris said. "I'm smart, I'm ambitious, I'm organized, I'm qualified, and I'm very focused and results-driven. Just ask my roommate," she said, nodding to Sidon, "who has seen my extensive chart for what I need to get done and when in order to get into Harvard next year. I started that chart in seventh grade. And can I say how exciting it is to have two smart, capable women vying to run an organization in a school also headed by a smart, capable woman? Just think of all the ridiculousness we could avoid if women were actually listened to everywhere else, too."

She shrugged. "Vote for me. You don't have to like me, but you can't pretend like I won't get the job done."

Paris absolutely voted for herself. Of course she did.

Lana was curious about how this entire thing worked; she'd never been part of a democratic process before.

The food was definitely a plus.

Lana wasn't entirely sure what anybody's qualifications would need to be for this, but Paris seemed driven and enthusiastic, and understood that likability wasn't a necessary quality in a leader, so Lana voted for her.
