Nailed it! | Wednesday, 3rd period

Hannibal waited for all the students to file in and take their seats, then nodded. "Welcome. I am Dr. Hannibal Lecter, and this is 'Nailed It!'" He paused for a moment, bemused. "This is a class I am teaching at request of the office moose, and I hope you will all enjoy it. The idea behind it is that I will present you with a recipe and my execution of it, and then you will do your best to follow that recipe and create the food yourself."

He keyed in instructions to the room, and it changed, showing separate gourmet stations for each student. "This is what you will usually have to work with. There may also be some additional resources, depending upon the food for the week. Please, take some time to look them over and become acquainted with them, and let me know if you have any questions."

He went behind his own station and pulled out a coffee and tea service, along with small cinnamon scones. "For today, food you will not have to recreate. Please enjoy, and as you do, introduce yourself to all of us. Then you can investigate your stations."

Prompto Argentum

Vette

"I'm Vette," Vette said, waving a hand, "and I learned what an orange was a few days ago, so I'm sure this is going to work out great."

She'd have a lot of fun ruining everything, anyway. That was what mattered.

Okay, that was a hot thing, and that was probably a cold thing, and... knives, she knew. Vette was going to just be thankful that she wasn't completely out of her element, thanks.

Sabine Wren

"I'm Sabine, and I think this was also a moose thing," she admitted.

She might be good at this, though! You never knew!

Sabine went to her station, and didn't really know what half the stuff was. That was fine, she totally had this.

This should be interesting.

"Fortunately we will have instructions for everything," Hannibal said. "And if you have questions, I'll be here to ask. I hope you enjoy learning about our foods."

Her hollandaise sauce would no doubt be a masterpiece.

"Sabine." Hannibal nodded to her. "If I recall my radio correctly," which of course he did, "you are familiar with explosives. So, you should be able to follow instructions as to precise recipes, and be familiar with heating elements. You should do nicely."

Or blow things up. Either would be interesting.

"How close is this to what you're accustomed to?" Hannibal asked.

"How are you faring?" Hannibal asked as he wandered by.

You know, if it weren't for his last class, Prompto might have come into this one and discovered quite possibly the most terrifying thing this school could put him through, but after his last class, this actually didn't seem half bad.

It was going to be a disaster, he knew that much, and he was starting to wonder how much of Noctis's retinue had to do with his class assignments. This sort of thing had Ignis written all over it.

Plus, the whole thing with the room changing was sweet, and he was glad the bus driver mentioned something about it, otherwise he would have been goggling to the point of embarrassing himself. He would still be goggling pretty fiercely, but not quite to that level.

Happy to help himself to a scone and some coffee and be somewhere that didn't make him think about his best friend going crazy and killing everyone, he beamed when his turn came up. "I'm Prompto!"

And he was just happy to be there.

In the past few years, as Prompto started to get into shape and lose some weight, he'd started poking around the kitchen a little, but his experience had mostly been salads, smoothies, and protein shakes (for all them sweet, sick gains, bro!). Which meant that he was mostly admiring how nice everything was while being somewhat intimidated by the idea of having to use some of it, but definitely admiring that blender, and generally starting to feel that, yeah....yeah! He could totally do this! He was going to learn to cook! He was going to start spitting out dishes like Ignis in no time!

Spoiler alert: nope.

"Oh, yeah. I'm great at following instructions," Vette said breezily. "Make sure to get them down in nice, neat point-form for me, would you?"

This was going to be such a disaster.

"Top-notch," Vette replied, turning a grin toward Hannibal.

Because... fake it 'till you make it? That was what she was going with, here.

"Which one's the one that makes the hot happen?"

"Welcome, Prompto." Hannibal smiled back. "And where are you from?"

"How familiar are you with the equipment?" Hannibal asked.

"Recipes will begin with the amounts you will need of each thing, and then numbered lists of what to do," Hannibal assured her. "If there are parts of it you're unsure about, you will have access to the internet to look up further information."

All of it in High Galactic. Enjoy that, Vette. Or try and find holonet instructions for souffle.

Hannibal gave her an amused look. "There are a stove and an oven, here." He opened the door to the oven. "The hot happens in here," he turned on one of the gas burners, "and up here."

"Eos!" Prompto was quick and eager with the answer. "That's another planet," a detail supplied with a knowing smirk and oh-so-subtle thumbs-up in Sabine's direction...he...would probably be doing this a lot in quite a few of the classes they shared, "so it's okay if you've never heard of it. But I'm from the city of Insomnia, in the kingdom of Lucis."

"Mmmmmm," Prompto was thoughtful for a moment before he decided there would be literally no benefit to pretending to be more knowledgeable than he was in this case, "a little bit. This stuff is, like, way nicer than my kitchen back home, and I started cooking for myself a little bit, a few years ago. Sometimes my mom freezes casseroles and stuff for me, so I know how to heat those in the oven, but wait until you see how I work my way around a blender. I," said with a smidgen of playful arrogance as he lifted his chin, shoulders squared, hand to his heart, "make a pretty mean peanut butter chocolate protein shake, if I may say so myself!"

This was inevitably going to lead to Vette just trying to look over someone else's shoulder and ending up with scrambled eggs.

"That sounds great!"

Don't ask what the internet is, don't ask what the internet is, don't ask...

"Ooooh. That makes perfect sense."

An oven! Fancy! Vette had literally never operated one of those things in her life!

Nina

That... that was totally Nina muffling a laugh, yes.

"I'm Nina!!!!!" she said, when it was her turn. Sorry-not-sorry for the punctuation, that was just how Nina was. "And I'm, like, totally used to kitchens, but not to this time????"

So... that was going to be interesting.

Nina was still puzzling through the question of what electricity was.

Vette turned a little grin and a wink toward Nina. Because of course she did.

This class was going to be hell for someone, and Vette was pretty sure it wasn't going to be her. Not if she could help it, anyway.

Knives, check! Cold box... she supposed that counted as a check.

The oven was a puzzle. And Nina threw up her hands when she saw it had another one of those tail-things that stuck into a wall.

There went her ability to figure out how it worked.

Hannibal nodded. "There is a city in our current country named New York, which is known as the city that never sleeps. I take it Insomnia is the same?"

He was guessing?

"Well," Hannibal said, "that is certainly a start. I doubt we will make many," any "shakes, but if you're familiar with the equipment, that will help."

"You may want to experiment with it," Hannibal suggested. "You can adjust the amount of heat with the dials, and see how long it takes to cook. Start with a piece of bread," he nodded to the breadbox, "or perhaps, if you don't mind sticky sweets, a marshmallow." He reached into the cabinet to get a box of those for her.

"Welcome, Nina," Hannibal said, with amused friendliness but much less enthusiasm. "What sort of a kitchen are you used to, then?"

Hannibal smiled. "Turn the dials." He pointed to them. "Slowly until you're used to them."

As he had with Vette, he showed her the bread and marshmallows. "If you want to test how much heat the flames give off, try with something simple first. For the oven, the dial shows temperature. What scale of heat measurement are you accustomed to?"

Vette eyed the marshmallows thoughtfully. And then glanced back toward the breadbox.

"Okay, sure, I can do that."

She was totally going to make a toasted marshmallow sandwich. Toasted.

That would be a valid choice, even if not one Hannibal would make.

"Utensils are in those drawers." He nodded to them. "Find one that won't burn your hand to hold onto. Or if you would rather use a pan, those are here. It won't be as true a test of the heat, but it will be more similar to most of the cooking you'll be doing."

Have at!

Vette took all of that into consideration, and then decided to take three slices of bread. One to just set on the rack in the oven, one to set on the pan in the oven, and one for up on top, on the stove, where she was going to...

She squinted at the selection of pans available, and then picked one at random.

If the worst that happened today was that some bread was going to get toasted in a saucepan, then they were on the right track. Maybe.

His guess was spot on.

"City that never sleeps, huh?" asked Prompto with a grin. "Yeah, that sounds about right! Maybe I'll have to see this New York place and see if it's anything like home. Man, that would be so dope. I really like it here and all, but, man, I'm really gonna start missing the big city big time! It's so quiet here at night, it's so weird."

He kind of wanted to ask what happened to Old York, but he'd hate to have things get all awkward if the answer was something like oh, you know, completely obliterated by its enemies, which was, of course, the most logical answer to a question like that.

"Ah, good!" said Prompto, grinning broadly, head bobbing with his excitement at the future use of it all. "Great! Cool. I definitely can keep explosions and fire to a minimum!"

He was joking.

...mostly.

You were making Hannibal sad with your lack of pun knowledge, Prompto.

And Old York was still there, thank you very much.

"The city just across the causeway is called Baltimore," Hannibal said. "It's not quite as large as New York, but significantly larger than Fandom, if you're looking for a city."

"That would be appreciated," Hannibal said with a nod.
