BWI Airport Portalocity Lounge, Saturday Morning

Nina was totally on board with walking through the big, swirly magical portal thing with Lady Teresa, Shin, and Mistress Jeane looking on. Okay, no, she really wasn't, but Lady Teresa watched her with eyes full of faith and that a) made it hard to do anything to let her down and b) distracted Nina from her envy over Mistress Jeane's scantily clad… va-va-voom.

"Keep in touch, Nina," Lady Teresa said as the portal popped into existence in front of them.

Nina hefted her bookbelt and grinned. "I'll be fine, Lady Teresa, I promise!!!!!!! I'll write you right away and tell you all about it!!!!!!"

It was, like, totally super satisfying as some of her classmates got to shove her trunks through the portal before her. But then it meant she had to go through it and--there was no way she was letting Lady Teresa see that she had any qualms at all about this!

"Lord Shin," she said, as she turned to go, "you'd better make sure to look after Lady Teresa!!!! I won't be there to pick up your slack, you know!!!!!"

And then, before he could respond to that, though she heard Lady Teresa laugh, Nina strode through the portal, her back straight, her stride strong, her nerves jangling… and promptly, on the other side, tripped over her trunks.

"Owwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Nina popped up to her feet immediately, despite her aching knees, just in case, like anyone could see her, and stuck her tongue out at the portal, which blipped out of existence, utterly shameless.

It was only once Nina primly sat down on one of her trunks (and did not at all collapse onto it, really) that she took a good look around her.

Glitter, check. Balloons, check. Banner for the school, check…

And literally no one else.

"Oh my gosh!!!!!!!!!!"

Was she late?!?!?!?!?!?! Was she early?!?!?!?!

She couldn't be the only one, right?!?!?!?!?!?!

The shuttle is here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, look! The shuttle had pulled up, and, after a brief break from the bus for Kanan to go get himself a karking cup of coffee, was absolutely going to be ready to go!

Come on, students. Try to keep shenanigans to a minimum for the exhausted looking scruffy man in the driver's seat.

"All aboard for Fandom!"

Some people didn't actually expect to be headed for a school on planet Earth. In fact, some people, the narrative certainly wasn't going to specify who, were absolutely caught by surprise when, in a flash of red light and a crackle of violet lightning accompanied by the smell of ozone, they happened to appear suddenly in the Portalocity lounge of a certain airport.

Vette (who might or might not have been the person in question), stood there for a moment with her arms outstretched, blinking away the sudden bright light in the room.

And then slowly lowered her hands as she looked around.

"... Oooookayyyyyy."

The balloons were unexpected. Definitely very unexpected.

The portal was fascinating, and Lana wished she had a scanner along, even as she did her best through the Force to ascertain what, precisely, it was.

She was paying so much attention to that, along with floating her trunk along next to her, that it took her a moment after it closed to actually look around the place.

Well. She wasn't sure what she'd been expecting, but it certainly wasn't this.

Lana blinked at the bus. "Is this school transportation, or a troop carrier?"

In her defense, most civilian transport hovered.

Like, okay, the... Nina didn't know what they were, but they had appeared sort of like she had and Nina, totally, had friends that were kobolds and she'd met a winger or two, so okay, this was some sort of different world not human!!!

She could totally cope with that!!!!

"Oh my gosh!!!! Are you okay?!?!?!?!"

"How did you get your trunk to fly?!?!?!?!?!?!!"

Nina clapped her hands to her mouth, looking abashed, before lowering them and saying, "I'm Nina!!!!! Hi, are you here for the school?!?!?!"

Kanan looked the girl over, taking in that confusion.

Taking in those eyes.

And very, very subtly shoving his connection to the Force to the side. Just that little bit more than usual.

"I suppose that depends. Have you got a preference?"

Vette swayed a little in place, and then lifted her hands up to her face to rub at her eyes.

"That," she said, "is an excellent question. Let me get back to you on that in just one moment?"

She moved one hand away from her face and glanced around the room again.

"... I don't know why I was expecting it to make more sense a second time around."

Well, that was an unusual amount of enthusiasm. "With the Force. I'm Lana, pleased to meet you. And yes, I am here for the school." She looked over the girl's clothes, but they didn't match anything she was familiar with. "Where are you from, Nina?"

Yeah, see, that coffee break? Bad idea!!!!!!!!!!!!

When it became totally clear that there was no adult coming to, like, drive the bus shuttle thing, Nina wandered over to it and tried the doors.

They opened.

Because she knew the full saying about the cat and it's curiosity, she scampered inside, sweeping the interior with a glance (if only to check for a passed out adult or something; just to say she tried) and then, since they were going to miss the picnic if they didn't do something...

Nina leaned out of the bus and called, "Anyone, like, know how to drive this thing?!?!?!?!"

"I'm here for school, not to be drafted into anyone's army," Lana said firmly. She could have stayed at home if she'd wanted a posting this fast. "I wasn't aware that was even an option."

"Were you, like, not expecting to come here?!?!?!?!" Nina asked, after having waited for the other... girl? She sounded like she was maybe a girl... to answer. "Oh my gosh, imagine that! I didn't even know that could happen!!!!!!!!!!"

"Oh, me!" Vette's hand shot into the air. "I can drive anything!"

This was patently false. That wasn't stopping her from making her way over to investigate.

"... What is it?"

She beamed back at Lana.

"I'm from Greenhill, one of the city-states of Jowston!!!!!" The best, best, best one in her opinion but Nina could concede she was a little biased. "And, oh my gosh, what's the Force????"

Hey, Nina was going to accept it as the truth! Sorta. … As close enough to being the truth?

“This,” Nina said, beaming, “is our ride to the island.”

The glitter, much like the other signs, sort of gave it away.

“It’s, like, a bus-shuttle-thing? That’s what my pamphlets totally said. Of course they also said there’d be an adult to drive us and that hasn’t happened, so…” Maybe she was wrong about what this thing even was too! “Either way, being late to the picnic would make the totally wrong impression, don’t you think?”

"Wouldn't want to be late to any picnics," Vette agreed, stepping up and inspecting the weird vehicle. She still had no idea what this picnic thing was about. Heck, she didn't know where this was. But food sounded good, and the bus was a good distraction, so right down under the dash she was going, to see if she could figure out how to get it running for her.

Nina loved Vette just a little for pointing not pointing out that hijacking was likely to make a worse first impression over being late. Ladies were never late!

She glanced to see if anyone else was hurrying to help—nope, nope, and nnnope!—and then wandered over to see what Vette was doing.

… She had… no idea what any of this was. She needed a library, stat, even though that would cramp her social life.

“Do any of these things make sense to you?” she asked.

"I've never heard of that, I'm afraid." It must be a Republic world. Or one of the oddities to this place, maybe?

"The Force is the energy of all living things. Some beings can use it to serve them." She set her trunk down. "You're here for school as well?"

"Yeah, you and me both," Vette replied, squinting up at the banner overhead.

Great. High Galactic. She'd apparently wandered into some kind of birthday party for snobs or something.

"Why are you here?"

"Sure. I do this sort of thing all the time," Vette chirped, taking this wire, and that wire, and just... She yelped and jumped back a little as a few sparks jumped out at her, and then with a grumble, the whole bus shuddered and started up. "Success!"

She. Was. The best.

“Oh my gosh!?!?!?!?!? You did it so quickly, that’s amazing!!!!!” Nina clapped her hands together. “Come on, come on, now that it’s working we need to make sure we’re the ones driving!!!!”

Nina had never driven anything more complicated than a horse-drawn carriage. This wasn’t going to stop her!

"Oh, I sliced into this thing, you better believe I'm going to be the one to drive," Vette said with a playful little grin. "Make yourself comfortable? Anybody who's going to be coming had better get onto this grumbling bucket of bolts!"

She had no idea where they were going.
