Creative Writing: Poetry (3/21/06)

Miles is slightly hungover. Do not poke happy!fun!writer.

"Good morning, class. I apologize that I neglected to assign a reading for this week. Obviously, that leaves us with two hours and not a lot to talk about. For the first part of the class, I want to hear about what your thoughts on poetry in general are... What is poetry? What does it mean to you? What do you want to get out of this class? It'll help me refocus my efforts a bit here."

"Don't forget that your modern lyrics presentations are due next week. We'll be having a special guest speaker, so everybody on their best behavior, okay?"

"Now, for your end of term project. I want you to compose one of the following poetry types --

Shakespearean sonnet
Sestina

Be sure to use an example of metaphor and simile each. This will be due on April 25th."

Kiki raises her hand.

"Sir? I'm not sure if this will change your final project assignments, but we did do sonnets (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/549570.html) earlier in the semester. I'm guessing you don't want us to just reuse our old ones?"

She's not brown-nosing, just being honest!

Kiki waits after class for everyone else - except Phoebe, naturally - to leave and for the not-class class to start.

Kiki waves and, with a little smirk, idly doodles something that looks supiciously like a paisley pattern in the margin of her notebook while the other students are coming in.

Sharon should know this. She really really should. Unfortunately, she's tongue-tied and inarticulate, so the best that comes out is: "Words, strung together. Sometimes they rhyme, sometimes they mean something. In the end, it's the gods' inspiration that provides grease to the squeaky wheel."

Gaining momentum, she continues, "Poetry means freedom, of will, of mind--even tied-down with a certain structure, there's movement. Wriggle room." She uses up the last of her breath to end with: "To learn, gain knowledge--to understand what it means to be human and laid bare."

[Apologies about this dropped thread, evidently, LJ still hates my inbox.]
