Home Ec, Tuesday, Period 1

The classroom had no cats today, nor balls of yarn. Instead, there was rather a lot of bread and cheese. And chocolate. And fruits and cakes and marshmallows.

And tiny pots with their own burners and almost absurdly long forks.

"Right, so. Continuin' on the theme of 'whoever wrote this curiculum thinks it's about 1965', today we're doin' fondue. It's kind of a fancy party dish that ain't unthematic to today's holiday, but unless you wanna make a crapton of chocolate covered strawberries to bring back to you room with you, it doesn't travel super well. So uh. Hope no one ate a big breakfast." He shrugged. "I got a whole bunch of recipes for y'all to follow -- take your time on these, you'll have plenty while things are meltin' and heating up, so even you guys who ain't great at reading should do okay. If you've got questions or you need help with a term or two, let me know, yeah? And uh." He looked around for a familiar tiny green shape. "Peridot, feel free to see this as an experiment in the melting point and properties of different earth foods or somethin'." Phase changes were sciencey, right?

"Anyway, go on and get crackin'. And try not to set anything on fire that ain't in a recipe."

Melted cheese and bread was right up Hyacinthe's alley. He still didn't understand the holiday, but he was willing to eat melted cheese for it.

Lucille didn't mind eating melted cheese. It also didn't seem that complicated. Cutting bread and dipping it in the pot would do, as she saw no reason to make it unnecessarily complicated.

Okay, Peridot generally loathed these Earth classes about food in particular. Frankly, she thought they were disgusting. But when Eliot said to treat this as an experiment in melting points...

Well, she was gathering up a handful of the confectionery puff rocks to see how well they melted. Were they made to melt? Peridot didn't know, and Peridot didn't care. They were white and squishy and cylindrical, and the first thing to end up in her hand.

It wasn't long before she had a small pile of toasted marshmallows that she wasn't going to do anything with. Maybe she'd have better luck with the strawberries...

Alluka had made an important discovery today:

"The forks are the right size for my friends!"

She was maybe spending more time making sure her bunny could 'hold' the fork than trying to eat all the melted cheese.

Ada did quite like melted cheese, thank you very much, and she was perfectly happy to stuff herself on it while she worked on making chocolate-dipped strawberries. She had two cookie-sheets worth cooling in the refrigerator at the moment, so a cheese-break seemed about perfect.

Once her first batch of chocolate covered strawberries were cooled and ready, Ada gathered a few up and went to go sit by Hyacinthe. "Sweets for the sweet?" she asked, offering him one. "Thank you for th' rose."

And if she thought he was going to do the normal thing and take it from her before eating it, she was quite mistaken. Hyacinthe leaned forward, taking the strawberry in his mouth and then grinned up at her.

"You're quite welcome, rinkeni," he said, dark eyes merry with mischief. "And thank you for yours as well."

Really, Ada tried not to assume anything about her friends beyond 'fun' and 'trust'. It made life more interesting.

She grinned as he took the treat, managing (barely) to suppress her mirth at his actions. "They seemed 't suit you," she said, eyes dancing. "Sendin' m' friends flowers last year brought me good luck, an' every good carnie knows you don't break a lucky tradition."

That did get a laugh out of her, because Ada knows you, Hyacinthe, and yes, your phrasing could be a literal translation given this was your third language. Or you were a very cunning linguist and knew exactly what you were saying.

Hint: the innocent helpful eyes were not actually making you look innocent. At all.

"Well, s'long as it's a pleasure an' not a chore of a job..." she mused, licking the chocolate smudges from her fingers.

His eyes tracked every single movement of her fingers. And her tongue. Definitely her tongue.

"Oh no, rinkeni," he assured her. "My very much pleasure indeed. Yours, too, I hope."

And he was going to eat that one right off her fingers as well, mouth warm and tongue soft as it slid over her fingers. "That would be wonderful, rinkeni," he said a moment later. "I've missed you as well."

And not just in his bed, though he was always happy to have her there as well.

Her favorite way of spending time with him were the quiet times when they traded stories and tall tales, and Ada actually learned bits and pieces of Tsingano or D'Angeline.

Not that she didn't enjoy their other ways of having fun, a lot, but she loved his friendship most.

"I don't got anything else goin' on today," she said, giving him a crooked grin. "I can even make us dinner, if'n you don't got other plans."

"'M always happy for your company an' your stories," she replied, smiling. "You like stir-fry or curry?"

Those were...really the only two she could manage with what she had in the fridge. Anything else, and she'd need to hit the store first.

You could interpret that as for the food, Hya, or whatever you were picky about. Ada didn't care.
