Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2016, Early Saturday Evening [Part 2]

When the last new graduate sat down, there was a brief moment of silence. The promise of a ceremony gone off without a hitch. Maybe, this time--

... the island gave a shudder. The clouds above parted. Strangely-shaped ships sank down from the sky with only minimal regard for gravity, dropping down in rows, a few feet at a time.

The Fandom graduation safety protocols switched on, and a barrier formed straight across, separating the graduates and the invaders from the rest of the audience. A small casket popped open at the end of the row of seats, presenting several really old school futuristic-looking zap guns.

... Graduates? Good luck.

Well, that just happened. Get your phones out, eat some popcorn, fuss about your grad, the works.

So there's space invading aliens dropping down from above. Grab a gun, get to work. Or hide. The invaders can only fire their laser guns straight down, so get a roof over your head and you're good! If they don't destroy it, of course.

The first lucky graduate to get a hit will find that each invader bursts apart into a veritable spray of tasty candy, so it's not a total loss this year.

Ray gun! Invaders shooting at you! At least they don't move too fast.

It takes an invader three shots to blast through most kinds of cover, so choose wisely.

After the last space invader has kasploded, the barrier falls away.

What's left is a floor full of candy.

Grads: check on each other! Guests: check on your grads! Or, y'know, grab a hat and grab as much candy as you can possibly get. It's up to you.

If you don't want to play Space Invaders all by your lonesome, let us know and we'll NPC for you!

"This is the most ridiculous thing," Four groused, reaching for a zap gun and firing at random.

A shower of candy greeted him. "What the hell?"

"Yo, this school ain't normal," Hardison grumbled, staring up at the sky with his arms crossed. "So ain't normal."

"We already know that, honey," Eliot said, patting him on the leg. "Fandom likes its traditions."

"Why is this place prepared for this stuff?" Gwen demanded. "Fine. Fine."

She was so glad she was getting out of here, and she'd shoot out her frustrations. This was her one day of accomplishment, god dammit.

"I'm moving!" Gwen declared. "Totally moving!"

"Oh," Cosette said, leaning back to take a few pictures (that were by no means being sent to her father). "Well . . . all right."

She thought they were kind of adorable, actually. Was that wrong?

What?

If Gwen hadn't just graduated, May would be trying to take her out of this school immediately.

"How soon can we get you out of this crazy place?" May asked because she was reasonable.

"I'm pretty sure I can get packed up in a day," Gwen said. "Like, that's a thing I think is going to have to happen."

"Let's make that happen," May said. "I'm not really sure this place is all that safe anymore."

She glanced up at the dome. "Are we really in space?"

"Yeeeeeah. You really don't want to know why," she said, wrinkling her nose. "It's been a week."

"In that case, I'm not going to ask. I trust you to know what's too much by this point," May decided.

"Dragons would have been cooler," Alana groused as she rolled for cover. But she got a handful of chocolate drops when she brought down her first alien, so things could have been a lot worse.

"Yeah, we've hit the limit," Gwen sighed, and looked around. "So anyway, dinner?"

She had been here two years, which meant those segues were totally normal.

"Wherever you want," May said. "As long as the people there don't try to shoot us with space lasers."

"...We'll cross our fingers," Gwen said after a moment.

Jono glanced up at the ships thoughtfully. He wasn't concerned, no. It wasn't as though Fandom's students couldn't handle this, after all.

He was going to send a bit of a glimmer of amusement Hannibal's way, though. After all, they'd seen those ships before themselves on a Portalocity stopover gone horribly awry.

Look, you react to a graduation invasion your way, and Jono would react to it his.

Yeah, Face was just gong to roll with it...while making pew-pew noises as he fired this weird looking blaster.
