Defending Yourself Against Magic | Friday, period 2

"So," Bob said, "Runes. Protection's often less about knowing one specific combination and more about the context you're working in and the ways you combine them." He drew two runes in the air. "Fire, water. Put them on either side of a circle," he demonstrated, "and they oppose each other. They can summon or block out other forces. Put them together," another drawing, "and they work together, giving you steam if you're working literally, or a more diffuse and malleable power, if you use them more symbolically."

He kept drawing, until he had an entire set in the air.

"This is a basic alchemical set of runes. I have a listing of their basic meanings, which Mabel had, but.." He paused and gave the room a pained and then incredulous (but still pained) look as Waddles trotted between all the students, a sheaf of papers in his mouth. He...wasn't going to ask. "Please take one each." He sighed and continued. "I'd like you all to work out at least one protective circle using these runes, and explain what it's meant to protect against. Don't worry about powering it; today is for theory only. Discuss, question, surmise, and extrapolate."

Waddles was here, even if Mabel wasn't! And he was one helpful swine!

Anyway, Mabel was a bird somewhere and he suspected there was food in it for him somehow, so he'd be happy to hand out papers for the rest of the day.

Salt, iron, silver, earth... Ada sketched out a few different ideas in her notebook. How much salt to bind a man? Or, rather, to make a ward that someone couldn't cross, giving Ada time to run for help.

Frank got to work quickly, eventually coming up with a protective circle involving symbols for vinegar and the symbol for distill, along with symbols for alkali to neutralize the acidity that came from distilling vinegar, and few others for good measure.

"This should protect against sobriety, and I'm perfectly willing to put it to the test," Frank declared while displaying his circle.
