Subcultures 101, Tuesday, Period 3

Class met at the causeway today, and Didi was dressed in an ankle-length Victorian dress complete with bustle and a matching feathered hat with a tiny veil. The perfect lady, she carried a parasol.

"Hello," she said. "Today we're going to the circus - Victorian style. Carnival Diablo is a sideshow that's been traveling Canada for almost 25 years. You'll see feats of strength, fire-eaters and someone who dresses up like a demon and eats bugs - but in a cool way. The reason we're going is I want you to look at the way it blends the Victorian aesthetic, horror and supernatural fandom, goth fashion, and a little punk rock twist."

She smiled and took a break, twirling her parasol. "If this is absolutely not your thing, don't worry about it. Go online, watch a Cure video or three, and call it good. The rest of you, we have a portal to catch."

Like a Gothic circus freak!

This is your chance to back out, guys.

It's a 2.5-hour show that somehow gets smashed into an hour Fandom time because timeywimeyness. The act, which is performed entirely in Victorian costume, includes bug-eating, glass-walking, a human dartboard and a bed of nails. (Let's just handwave that, somehow, it's performed in a way that's appropriate for high school students.)

If it gets to be too much for you, you can take a break and chill out by the refreshment stand. They have popcorn.

Four was really, really fascinated by the human dartboard. It seemed like a very Dauntless hobby.

Velma Martinez

This gave some of the things that Velma saw back with The Super-Patriots, Inc a run for its money. She was eating popcorn and watching, fascinated.

And she couldn't pass up the chance to snag a Victorian kewpie doll while she was there. Halfway through her obligatory spiel about heroics, she remembered that she didn't do that stuff anymore. But she finished her speech anyway and only bought the doll after she felt the nebulous agreement to her terms.
