101 Ways To Survive In The Field, Tuesday

"Okay, so I said we were going to be done with the snow stuff this week," Atton said.

They were standing right in the middle of the Cold Canadian Woods simulation again. "I lied."

Or rather, he'd changed his mind after that whole fiasco yesterday morning.

"Cardio," he called, "It's important. I know we did moving on snow already, but you know what? You haven't done laps on snow. Get changed. This'll teach you about exhaustion and cold, which is important. Go, go, go!"

You could blame all of this on Atton filling in for Wash's class a couple of times, kids.

Frank wasn't one to run laps. He was one to saunter laps. It helped him take in the environment. Like that! That was a tree covered in snow! You didn't see that every day! And this way he could be more alert and ready if, say, a bear attacked. At a run, he couldn't offer the bear a drink. At a saunter? The bear might become his new best friend.

You know what? Kathy loved laps. Today especially. So she was gritting her teeth and focusing on her breathing and maintaining a grueling pace and certainly not how good lookng each and every classmate she had was or other ways they could get this hot and sweaty and--

NO. RUNNING.
