Lying 101, Monday Second Period

"Today, we're going to continue working more on the fine art of body language," Lito declared at the beginning of today's class. "There are several 'tells' that may give away a liar, but one you may not have considered is being too still in an effort to control those tells. You may, for instance, have noticed that when you lie you shuffle your feet, or fidget with your hands, so you stand with your feet firmly planted and your hands clasped." Lito demonstrated, and said, "Well, now you look like you are at attention. Not exactly less suspicious, no? So let's practice standing naturally while telling enormous fibs. Pair up, and I'm not going to assign you a subject because I find it's easier to lie convincingly when it feels a bit silly, or like acting. I'm going to let you decide what you should lie to your partner about."

Having mostly recovered from the embarrassing events on Saturday, Lucille would still rather avoid Ada. She had made a complete fool of herself in front of the other girl, but as they were in the same class, there was no opportunity to hide from her. Lucille chose the strategy of pretending Ada wasn't there.

She had the posture one could expect of an accomplished young lady. He education might have been somewhat lacking at Allerdale Hall, but her mother had made sure that Lucille would not make a fool of herself in polite society, even of the methods of learning this skill had not been quite pleasant.

It would be suitable for lying, wouldn't it? After all, that was what one did in polite society a lot of the time.

"How lovely to see you again!" Mara said enthusiastically, beaming at Lucille. "I can't believe I never realized you were in this class with me."

Lucille would ordinarily have been a lot less enthusiastic in return, but right now she was relieved that it was Mara and not Ada who greeted her, so she smiled back.

"Neither did I. I hope you had a pleasant weekend."

That was reasonably enthusiastic for Lucille.

"It was wonderfully uneventful," Mara said, adjusting her posture to openness and honesty as Lito mentioned them.
