fandomhigh | Student Council, Friday [Lunchtime]

Once again, Zoe had taken over the usual classroom for a Student Council meeting, and set out a variety of warm foods and drinks. Sure, it wasn't that cold in Fandom yet, but it was still October.

"Thank you for taking time from your pre-break packing to be here," she said, once everyone was seated. "It seems our first eventful weekend went off without a hitch." Sparkly elves weren't a problem, exactly, just something she would have to stay aware of in the future. "Before we go on our fall break though, we have to talk about Homecoming. Homecoming will be the week after we get back. We need to discuss what kind of inevitably-glitter-laden theme we want to have." She paused for a moment, making an annoyed face. "We might also want to decide about having a festival like last year, or going back to having a carnival, or doing something else. For those of you who weren't here last year, there was an... incident that made our usual carnival not such a great idea. But maybe enough time has passed that people won't be traumatized if we go back to tradition. I'll leave that ultimately up to all of you."

What are we going to throw glitter at and call a theme this year?

Incident? Trauma? Trip? What?

Not that Dante was paying particularly close attention. Except for the part about some kind of school party. Had to be a way to make that be... something that wasn't lame, right?

He sat back in his seat and put his feet up on the desk, thinking.

"Well, it's Homecoming, right? So the theme could be something like Habitat. Different corners of the room could be decorated to look like different animal habitats, and it could be kind of woodsy in some spots, and rainforesty in others, and the food could match! Bear claws in one spot, and maybe fish tacos in another. Kind of a whole, Fandom is different things to different people, but it's everybody's home."

"Any chance we can get Caritas to sponsor this?" Dante said.

He didn't think so, but it was worth a shot.

But if Isabela had told anyone, they might have stopped her and deprived the island of Zevran's beglittered magnificence.

"It'd make them feel involved in the community," Isabela added in support.

Weren't you so glad to have these two on the council, Zoe?

Gwen had a great weekend! She was also really homesick but what're you gonna do. Grab lunch and go to StuCo, that's what.

"You used to go to a semi-normal school, huh?" Gwen asked.

Eric had survived, certainly, although it had left him feeling a tinge homesick. But! That was what Skype was for. And now he had the fall break to look forward to, which was exciting. And then homecoming, also exciting... in short, dwelling on that feeling of homesickness just wasn't happening too much.

Tali was very carefully sipping at a dextro hot chocolate with marshmallows through a funky-looking straw that she was not going to insist wasn't a straw, because she was sober, thank you. (She had actually cobbled together a filtration system, which sort of made the marshmallows pointless, but there had been a close call with a pumpkin spice latte last week and she didn't feel like taking chances.)

April sighed. "For my old school, that would be considered creative."

"Well, I was going to say a carnival sounded like a good idea, but the way you said 'incident' is making me second guess that," Tali said, tapping one finger against her chin. "Then again, it has been a year, and if this group is a good sample, then a good chunk of the student body wouldn't have bad associations with one. Besides. That way we get the opportunity to make up for it -- keelah, that incident wasn't on Student Council, was it?"

Alana hadn't realized how close homecoming was. She kept thumbing through pictures of dresses on her phone when she was supposed to be listening to Zoe and discussing a theme.

Every so often she would realize that wasn't presidential behavior, try to look interested, and last a whole minute or two before going back to the Modcloth app.

I love that "throw glitter at [something] and call it a theme" is pretty much a time-honored Fandom tradition by now.

"Well, it is," Gwen said. "Last year the theme was glitter."

Glitterpunk, technically, but the punk part was sorta nebulous.

"Just... glitter?"

WHERE WAS THE SUBSTANCE?

"If not, I've got us covered," Frank said. "Conspiratorial wink." He winked.

"No clowns!" Frank declared. "I'll make signs to make sure they're outlawed."

"You're the best, Frank," Dante called, giving him the thumbs up.
