Hunting 101, Thursday

For today, Sam had decided to get everyone together in a regular classroom, and he waited for everyone to come in and have a seat before getting up from where he was leaning against the desk.

"Hey guys. I'm gonna assume everyone's here for Hunting 101. Uh, welcome," he said, smiling to get rid of some of his nervousness. "My name is Sam Winchester. I don't think I've had the pleasure of getting to know any of you yet, but that's what the first week is all about, right? So, I come from a family of hunters - supernatural hunters, not like, random animal hunters. Our family business is finding demons, ghosts, and any other creatures that are hurting people, and taking them out. But, I also graduated from Fandom, so I know that not every special creature you might run across is necessarily evil." Hopefully, that would be reassuring to anyone special in the room. "My goal with this class is to help you recognize the signs that something evil is around, and start to know how to take care of the problem. Considering how often this place gets invaded... well, we'll see if it's all useful."

Sorry to anyone who didn't know about the invasions yet! "For today, I just want to get a feel for who's here. Let me know your name, and any experience you might have with the supernatural. Oh, and if you have any weapon training, that would be good to know too."

It was less scary that it would have been with Dean here, that's for sure.

Kathy Li

"Hi, I'm Kathy Li, and my only experience with the supernatural has been here on Fandom." So, you know, ghosts, elder gods, evil carnivals, that kind of thing. "As for weapons, I've got training in hand-to-hand--mostly a modified version of Krav Maga--as well as knife-fighting and, I guess, improvised?" Considering the weapons she normally used, 'improvised' was being generous. "Mostly improvised sheng biao--err, rope darts."

Lottie Grote

"I'm Lottie Grote," Lottie said. "My home town gets weird things on the regular so I have faced hypnotizin aliens, scapegoated trolls, baby-eatin cryptids, selkies, curses, and assorted Eastern European folk spirits." And she'd even one of those down herself! "I am WELL SCRAPPY --" she wasn't "-- but I prefer to find a non-violent solution when possible. I can knock a grown man over with the force of my accusations!"

Cosette Fauchelevent

"Hello. I'm Cosette," said the girl who looked like she absolutely did not belong in this class at all. "And to tell the truth, I didn't sign up for this class. My only experience with the supernatural has been here in Fandom, and I'm afraid even that exceeds my experience with weapons."

She looked mildly abashed at that, but smiled brightly. "But since such things turn out to be quite useful here, I've no objection at all to learning."

Would she be mentioning this class to her father? Hahaha no.

Frank Doyle

"My name is Frank Doyle and I was but a small child when I first encountered something that I have very deliberately repressed so I'd thank you for not asking for details. More recently I ended a monster-hunting relationship with a church due to an incident I'm currently trying to repress, in relation to which I expect that you'll offer the same level of not butting in," Frank said. He took a drink, because if course there was a glass on his desk. Did you not hear him about repression? "But in between those events were plenty of other monsters, ghosts, demons, and the occasional old groundskeeper in a rubber mask to whom a group of meddling kids were a constant irritant, to say nothing of their pet dog. I don't have any deeply personal reasons to not get into any of those, I just don't care enough about record-keeping to keep them straight."

"And I know a thing or two about weapons."

Vider Bearskin

"Vider Bearskin," Vider said. "I know a couple of gods and I've dealt with trolls and stuff." You know. The usual. No big. "I would say I'm...intermediate, with sword and spear, but I prefer the axe. I'm no good with ranged weapons. We don't really use them in my world." A beat. "Oh, and I'm a berserker, so getting me angry would be a bad idea."

Ezra Sagishi

Four

"I'm Four, and other than the stuff that's happened here in the last year, I don't have any supernatural experience."

His background was more 'ruthless dystopia'. "I can shoot a gun, throw a knife and punch people pretty hard in the face, though."

Kaylin Neya

"I am Kaylin Neya and I am from a place where magic and odd creatures are the usual." She considered for a moment. "I'm not sure any of them would actually be considered evil, though I sometiems wonder about the mages from the Arcanum."

Her hands brushed her hips where her daggers would be. "I am well-trained in the use of daggers and hand-to-hand combat. I am also learning to use a sword and staff."

"I'm Ezra Sagishi, and I have a lot of experience with the supernatural." No details, but, yeah. Just trust him on this. "I'm also very good with knives and crossbows."

"Oh wow, that sounds really cool," Sam said. "Improvisation can be really important when protecting yourself, which I'm sure you've figured out dealing with Fandom's fun."

"I took a few classes in it and everything," Kathy said, smiling. She liked approval, okay? "And I'm getting private lessons now. But there's not a lot that you can carry that doesn't look like a weapon without freaking people out. So I had to get used to finding things that could fly under the radar without attracting a lot of attention."

Ada Miller

"Ada Miller, and the only 'supernatural' I have is working my family's haunted house on the midway. Weapons?" Ada shrugged. "I got dozens of boy cousins. I learned how to fight dirty when I was real little."

"I think you're going to like some of the things we play with in here. My brother made an EMF meter out of a Walkman," Sam said, laughing. "Things that don't look dangerous can definitely be dangerous if you use them right."

Oh, thank goodness he had someone really interesting in here. "I'm a fan of non-violence too, when possible. I have a feeling you might like spells that stop creatures."

Sam gave Cosette a sympathetic look. "That's totally okay. I'm glad you want to learn. With that kind of attitude, you'll be fine here, I promise."

Cosette gave him a grateful look; she'd been a bit concerned about being told she shouldn't be here. "I'd much rather not have to kill anything if I don't have to, though I do understand it's unavoidable sometimes."

. . . which wasn't to say that she'd want to kill something if it was unavoidable.

Apparently all those beheaded flies from when she was seven didn't count.

Judging by the look on Lottie's face, she absolutely would. "Spooky spells! I'll be the all powerful witch-lady!"

Possibly for the wrong reasons.

It was only through years of practice that Sam was able to keep a straight face and simply nod in understanding. "Okay, I... will refrain from asking too many questions about your past," he said. "But it seems like you're going to be well-equipped for this class."

"Yeah, people who know gods are generally not the type you want to anger," Sam said with a smile. "I don't intend to make anyone angry here, so I think we'll be good, and I'm glad you're here."

"I'm kind of glad there are some people here without much supernatural experience besides being in Fandom. It makes me feel better about the places you're going back to."

You know, except for that whole dystopia part, sorry Four.

"I'm sure your skills will come in handy the next time something invades town."

"That's awesome. And yeah, I wish I could say the magic where I'm from isn't evil but... it's good to know there are places where things are strange and safe," Sam said.

Sam was curious, but he also knew not to press if students had stuff they didn't want to talk about. "Ooh, crossbows are fun, and if you already have some experience then you're in good shape."

Sam snickered softly and nodded. "My brother taught me how to fight. When it comes to your survival, or the survival of people you care about, I say there's nothing wrong with fighting dirty," he said.

"I wouldn't say it's safe," Kaylin said, "But I don't think any of the races are truly evil." Except maybe the Tha'alani, but she wasn't mentioning them.
