Creative Inspirations, Monday, Period One
Jono was looking… well, excited again, this week, as the class gathered to wait for their portal.
//We're going to be going out to see another natural inspiration,// he said, giving the group something like a smile as he rocked, once, from heel to toe. //From up above, this time around. We've booked a plane, which I'll be flying - don't worry, I can actually do that - and we'll be doing a fly-over of yet another volcano, and the lake that owes its very unique chemical properties to its proximity.//
Hannibal gave Jono an amused look, uncertain if he were more excited for the lake or the flying. Well, no; he was fairly certain it was the flying. "Lake Natron in Tanzania," he continued, "has no outlets - water only leaves it by evaporation. Because of this, it is extremely alkaline and has a very high salinity." He eyed the students. "It's a very strong base, like lye, and very salty. This means that microorganisms grow there in abundance, giving it a rather unique color."
//It's a harsh environment,// Jono shared, //bloody hostile to most plants and animals, but the lake still plays home to an interesting assortment of animals. In fact, we might even spot a flock of flamingos as we fly overhead. A few of you might be familiar with some photos that were taken not long ago, of animals that look as though they were turned into calcified statues simply by coming in contact with the water. The photos are stunning, and the animals were indeed found mummified by the water, but they were posed by the photographer, and while the salinity of the water will irritate your skin, the animals most likely weren't killed by coming in contact with it, so much as they just happened to die in the lake of natural causes, and the water preserved their bodies.//
Little factoid of the day, there. The pictures were still pretty damn stunning, though, if anybody was familiar with them.
"We'll be approaching over Oldoinyo Lengai, which is an active volcano. Its lava is unique for its composition, and erupts at fairly low temperatures, so you won't see any red lava flows during the day. It can even be hiked by the adventurous." Which they would not be doing today. "We'll be viewing the caldera, then approaching the lake." Where, if they were lucky, there would be no flamingos visible.
//And then we'll head back here to sculpt volcanoes or draw flamingos,// sorry, Hannibal, //or whatever else catches your imagination.//

(The plastic dinosaurs would just have to die melodramatically in the evil red lake, instead. Sure, they'd said that it likely didn't actually kill the mummified birds, but WHERE WAS THE FUN IN THAT?)
