[Week #6 - The High-wire Job]

Another Tuesday, another portal - this one to Virginia Beach, Virginia, and the Virginia Beach Adventure Park.

“I have been waiting all semester for this!” Parker was looking squeeful and other EE! words. “Ropes course! With ziplines and high wires and canopy walks!”

"The courses are rated on all different levels," Eliot said. "So those of us who aren't professionals when it comes to ropes and harnesses shouldn't have any trouble finding something fun to do, anyway." He didn't really anticipate any trouble with enthusiasm from this group. Honestly, he'd been feeling relatively extraneous all session. You know, when they weren't getting attacked by alots.

“You have to wear your protective gear. And listen to the safety presentation.” Parker snorted, then said under her breath, “My stuff is better.”

Eliot patted her reassuringly on the shoulder. "We know, darlin'. But your stuff ain't covered under the park's insurance."

“Just ask if you need help. Or ideas,” Parker added, grinning at them. “There aren’t any diamonds on this course, but you can’t have everything.”

Up High!

You can stay pretty low, or get up to five stories off the ground, your choice.

Because it would make Parker sad if we left these off.

Who are not Tarzan and Jane, but seem to be enjoying it anyway.

Who are not named Cheetah and Tantor.

And because Christian Kane is not in it:

Parker is, of course, wearing the protective gear. And swinging everywhere like someone fed a monkey way too much coffee.

Eliot stuck mostly to the lower ropes, keeping an eye on things from below, and on any students who stuck with the beginner obstacles.

But, yes, he managed to have plenty of fun while he was at it, anyway.

Ringo Noyamano

Ringo's eyes were wide enough to look like they might fall out of her head. She'd never been all that much of a nature person. Which wasn't because she didn't like nature, but because she really loved ATs, and they didn't tend to handle well on soft surfaces like dirt and wood.

But this place had ropes and steel cable practically everywhere, and Ringo's brain couldn't help but trace imaginary runs criss-crossing through the trees.

Of course, she hadn't brought her ATs, but that wasn't going to keep her from running around like a mad-woman trying to capture a bit of that feeling up among the higher parts of the course.

Riding ATs all the time kept Ringo in excellent shape, but it wasn't really the sort of thing that built a lot of upper body strength. Which meant that Ringo wasn't about to do much in the way of crazy tree climbing or swinging or anything.

But lower body strength and an inhuman sense of balance did enable some pretty sweet jumps, leaps, and flips whenever two parts of the course found themselves close enough to each other.

Eventually she took a breather, perched on one of the higher ropes, and just taking in the view. Maybe she could find someone to play tag with...

Cosette Fauchelevent

Oh, there was no way Cosette would be staying on the ground, thank you very much, though she was looking at the course with a very small amount of -- not trepidation, exactly. More like uncertainty, since this was a very different thing than trying to climb trees or up to the roof of a building.

BUT THERE WAS A ZIPLINE. So she was determined to do it anyway.

HEEEE. Isn't it? (Bella says Christian Kane was on tour, which is why he is missing, but otherwise, it is just LOVELY. *hugs all participants, including the Russian-accent guy and Richard Marx*)

No, definitely not. Toby was definitely enjoying getting to play in what was essentially the grown up version of a jungle gym, though.

Maybe they weren't, but that wasn't going to stop Kathy from playing up in the very tops of the trees, running back and forth along the ropes and wires and flinging herself along the ziplines with abandon.

Kathy took up a position on a high canopy walk, announcing, "NONE SHALL PASS!"

Look, she just really wanted to have a pretend swordfight while she was up here. Could you blame her?

Eliot waited until the end of class, when Kathy would have to be coming back down out of the trees, then approached. "Hey. I got a favor to ask you."

"A favor?" Kathy asked, blinking up at him as if she might have misheard. "Of course! What do you need?"

Kathy, a smart person asked that before agreeing.

Okay, Eliot wasn't quite sure why that question got befuddlement out of her, but he was just going to roll with it. "My team an' I are going outta town next weekend. I was hopin' you could keep an eye on Val for me."

Kathy still wasn't used to people she respected wanting to ask her for favors! Shh!

Besides, that confusion quickly turned into a rush of warmth and appreciation. "Watch Val for you?" she asked, clasping her hands over her chest. A puppy! Kathy'd never had a pet before, not even goldfish. If she wasn't so conscientious, Eliot would end up coming home to find Val had gained 10 pounds over the weekend. "I'd love to!"
