Outdoor Adventures Time! Tuesday, period 1

“CLIFF DIVING.”

The class met this week on the edge of the preserve. Eliot, who had a large bag of supplies slung over his shoulder and a walking stick, gave Parker a bit of side-eye.

"Yes," he said. "After we hike out to the cliffs."

“Right, that,” Parker agreed. “I brought wetsuits again.” She pointed to a few duffel bags. “Because it’s warm out, but the water is still cold. And if you want to dive in just your clothes, that’s okay. I brought towels. But you might regret that is all I’m saying.”

"Those of you not into throwin' yourselves off cliffs," all, like, three of you, "I'll be setting up some campfires at the top. If you're interested, I can show you. If not . . . I got stuff for s'mores."

Parker was maybe rubbing off on him.

“Or you can do both,” Parker pointed out. “If you wanna dive for a bit and then decide you’re not up for it again. Or vice versa. No limits, people.”

"Only requirement is the hike," Eliot said. "Which you might wanna get used to, since stuff we're doin' on the island is all gonna involve walking to it. It's a shorter one today, though, only about ten minutes. Keep an eye out and see if you can spot any of Fandom's weirder wildlife."

Like those green deer people always talked about. Eliot hadn't really seen one. He wasn't chatty enough.

“Let’s get going, people! Hup hup hup!”

That last bit was for you, Eliot. Heee.

It was entirely possible Eliot could be goaded into jumping off the cliff, today. It wasn't that he didn't do that sort of thing.

Just, you know, usually he was being shot at first. Or getting hit by a car.

Funny how Kathy's attention was everywhere but Eliot today. Nope. Definitely not making eye contact. It might make learning how to build a campfire difficult, but she would persevere.

Hey, look, cliffs!

Don't think Eliot didn't notice. He was briefly torn between letting her be mortified in peace and rubbing it in just a little.

Hardison, at least, would be entirely unsurprised by his ultimate choice as he went over to hand Kathy a pocket knife. "Here, help me sharpen up a few sticks for the marshmallow roastin'."

Kathy was going to send that poor Mr. Hardison a fruit basket and her condolences.

Faced with a direct appeal to her TA duties, Kathy reluctantly turned toward Eliot. "Want me to--" Whatever she question she had fled her mind entirely as she looked at the knife and the sparkle of mischief in Eliot's eye.

On part of her mind actually slow-clapped for that brilliant wordless takedown. Just--damn. The rest of her was turning crimson and considering making a break for the cliffs. Maybe she'd find the one rock Parker missed?

"Oh. My. God."

And the absolute worst part? She took the knife almost by reflex, but had no earthly idea how to use it without looking as inexperienced with knives as she was,

Eliot had not actually anticipated her not knowing how to whittle. Admittedly, this was kind of a gross oversight on his part, but in his defense, where he grew up, every teenager knew at least the basics of "pocket knife on stick".

"You're gonna cut your thumb off that way," he said, and settled onto a nearby log to demonstrate the proper way of handling the thing. "Like this, see?"

Kathy had grown up in LA! The kids that had pocket knives weren't using them for whittling.

"Not one word," she hissed at him, even as she adjusted her grip. "I said we were practicing knife throwing!"

And they had! Ish!

"Alright," Eliot said, raising his hands in a little 'I surrender' pose. "So we'll cover a couple of the other uses for 'em, then."

And then, because he wasn't actually a responsible adult type figure, he added: "I won't even charge you for it."

He was so lucky that Kathy hadn't actually started whittling anything yet, because she probably would have cut off her own thumb with that comment.

"I am going to literally throw myself over the cliff," she threatened because what else could she say?

She was just never going to stop blushing. Never ever ever.

"I should hope so," Eliot said, starting in on stripping his stick. "Parker'd be real disappointed if you gave it a miss, entirely."

After class, Edward trundled up to Parker with a grin on his face. "Professor Parker?" he said. "May I have a word?"

Edward wasn't looking excited about doing this at all.

Except oops, as he walked on up, he was grinning a bit. A lot. A lot a bit?

This was the best class of all time.

"I spoke to Cosette about last week's class," Edward said, "We were thinkin' about going windsurfing again, and we were wondering if perhaps we could borrow some equipment..."

She'd been so accommodating about the jumping off a giant rock bit. And Cosette and Edward apparently did maybe-dating their way.
