Cara had her students meet her out in the preserve. Because Cara was a terrible person.

"My name is Cara, and this is How Not to Die, if you need me to explain the what this class is about, things are already looking pretty hopeless." Which was always the kind of pep talk students needed. "I see a couple of unfamiliar faces so it's time for more introductions, which I'm sure you're all very familiar with now. At least it'll be the last round until either the new semester or the island makes everyone crazy again, and who here actually thinks the former will happen before the latter?"

"Now I need your names, your class, and since I'm going to assume your reasons for taking this class are blatantly obvious, some skill or talent you already possess which can help you in surviving your future endeavours."

Once that was over with, she continued. "Now, as you either already know, or have hopefully been told if you're new, this island is not only completely insane, but regularly comes under attack by all manner of often ridiculous forces, which means it's time for your first practical lesson in survival, knowing your terrain. So follow me, we're taking a tour of the island."

At least it was a short enough lecture that no teal deer showed up?

Consider the weather motivation to be concise.

If it seems like Cara's leading you down every single side street and alley even if you have to pass the same spot multiple times, it's because she is.

Better you learn alternate routes now than having to figure them out when people are trying to kill you.

Because you can totally talk and keep pace with her, right? Of course you can.

Cassandra Pentaghast

It was cold, yes. But Cassandra's armor had an enchantment against cold damage on it, and her underclothes were more than sufficient to keep her warm. (Then again, her constitution stats were likely higher than most in this class.)

"My name is Cassandra Pentaghast," she said. "I am a sophomore, and I am competent with the sword and shield, though I wish to improve."

This was not the first time Cassandra had gone through an exercise such as this: Byron favored it from time to time when they reached a new area.

It took her a short while to realize this was what was happening. When she did, she released an approving snort to no one in particular.

Certainly, she was getting colder with each passing moment. But something as simple as cold was something to be endured. She considered the entire class good practice. Cara was the first genuinely sensible teacher she had had.

Cara nodded. "We can work on that," she said, seeming almost cheerful at the prospect. Which wasn't at all ominous.

"Good," Cassandra said. "I had hoped we could. Thank you."

She wasn't terrified by the cheerful, quite possibly because she was already used to a ridiculous amount of punishment in the name of training.

Though it was more likely that she just didn't know Cara well enough yet to judge.

Probably the second. "We'll see if you're still saying that after we're done."

"I think I will be fine," she said.

Them's fighting words, Cass.

Fighting implied Cassandra had a chance. "Don't say I didn't warn you."

Marasiah Fel

"Marasiah Fel, and I'm a senior," Sia said. "I'm skilled with a lightsaber and hand-to-hand combat."

"Both useful," Cara said. Two students had given practical answers, hopefully the rest would follow suit.

Four

"I'm Four, a junior, and I'm good with guns--better at short range than long--knives, and hand-to-hand combat," he replied briskly.

This weather reminded him of home. It didn't make him miss it. At all.

Four had a slight smile on his face after they passed the same spot a second time--he'd figured out what she was up to.

He'd cased the island when he'd first arrived, but this was a good way to see what had changed since then.

Jalian d'Arsennette y ken Selvren

"Jalian d'Arsennette," Jalian answered. She was dressed in jeans, hiking boots, a tank top, and a light jacket; she felt the cold, but it didn't much bother her. "I'm good with knives and hand-to-hand, acceptable with a bow." Her "acceptable" was probably a twenty-first century "awesome".

She shrugged. "I'm a trained Huntress of ken Selvren. I grew up surviving."

Jalian had done much the same herself when she first got here, but not all at once. She made a game of quizzing herself on what was coming up next.

Cara still wasn't a fan of firearms but the rest... "We can work with that," she said.

Which meant it was likely at Mord'Sith levels of passable. "Bow-work and hunting are unusual skills for this place."

"I didn't learn them here," Jalian pointed out. "If ken Selvren don't hunt and farm, they starve. And farming is men's work."
