Technology and You- Monday- 1st period

When the students got to the Danger Shop today, they'd find themselves in the middle of a huge, busy train station. Honestly, Kitty wouldn't have Danger Shopped this if she didn't think they'd possibly run into time constraint issues.

"Welcome to Penn Station, in New York City," Kitty greeted them, passing out subway maps. "Today we're going to be covering the subway. In big cities public transportation is a must, unless you're in LA and then I guess you're okay sitting in traffic for hours instead." Kitty did not spend like any time there, no. "Big cities have a lot of people, a lot of cars, and using something like subways or trains or buses is a good economical way to get around all that, even if it might take a little longer sometimes. We're not going to focus on buses today, but know that if you take them, it means a lot of waiting outside for them to show up, and you're going to need a card or money for your trip, depending on what city you're in. Now what I gave you is a subway map. The routes are color-coded, and named by numbers and letters, which makes them easier to read, and they stop at several places to get people get on and off. At certain places you can even transfer onto other lines, either at the station or by getting off and walking a block or whatever to the next station.

"So, locate Penn Station on the map. It's south of Manhattan there," she said. "Now I want you to find Battery Park, and figure out the best way to get there. And then based on what you guys come up with, we're going to take that way in, and then once we get there, we can hang out for a bit."

Nathan was unfamiliar with subways. He'd heard of them but they were crowded so while they worked for disappearing easily into, they didn't for everyday travel.

He was looking at the map, brow furrowed.

Nathan made sure not to take up too much space when he'd sat down. And he kept his hands in his pockets just to make sure he'd feel anyone trying to lift anything from him.

Ichabod might be completely unfamiliar with subways, but he knew how to read maps. The provided one may look a little odd, but that didn't mean he couldn't quickly figure out the route to Battery Park.

It was noisy. And crowded. Ichabod found a seat and sat down between two complete strangers who gave him odd looks, which he responded to with a polite smile.

Pleased to leave the crowded station, Ichabod enjoyed the view across the water, contemplating the enormous statue on the small island in front of him. A feat of engineering, no doubt.

This was a New York Celia didn't know, but the hum of the city remained the same, in small ways. She studied her map, feeling the warmth of familiarity as she recognized the names of locations, even if the map itself was a touch on the confusing side.

"It's a bit different than the New York you showed us in history class the other week, isn't it?" Cosette asked lightly, looking up from her map.

Understatement much, Cosette?

Cosette had never even been on a regular train before, so this would -- as was an ongoing theme with her -- be new. She was completely up for it, though.

Her father would have absolute vapors over this if it weren't in the Danger Shop, probably.

If anyone sat down next to her, she would probably try to strike up a conversation for the duration of the trip.

"Just a touch," Celia agreed with a slightly nervous giggle, also glancing up from her own map. "This whole system is amazing, but it must have been constructed after my time."

Unless she'd simply not noticed the construction of such an endeavor, but that seemed...unlikely.

"I don't know that I'd recognize Paris if I saw it today, either," Cosette said in a commiserating tone. The Haussmann-ized streets, for one, would probably throw her off completely, to say nothing of the Eiffel Tower. "It's my understanding that they've a train system like this now, too, but I can hardly imagine it. Just think of all those people and all the racket going back and forth under your feet, and you wouldn't even notice it if you were walking down the street!"

To be fair, she hadn't yet walked past a subway grate.

He smiled at her, reaching out for her hand. "Is the statue there in your time?" Ichabod asked.

"She's under construction," Celia said, threading her fingers through his. "And the subways aren't even started, though now I want to go research when that began." She sighed a little, smiling. "It still feels like New York, though, even if it's all...modern and clean."

"It's noisy enough without the threat of rumbling streets," Celia agreed, her brows lifting. "One of these days, I keep swearing I must do a tour of the cities I know in my own time, to see how they've changed. I haven't seen much of Paris -- my father loves Montmartre, so I tend to be...left to my own devices, when we visit." She made a little face. "But it's remarkably easy to navigate, at least."

"Perhaps some of us ought to see about a trip," suggested Cosette, eagerly. "I am curious to see how things have changed, though I don't remember so very much of the city, to tell the truth. I was still very small when we went to live in the convent for a while, and we weren't gone from there very long before we came here. But my father took me for walks in the Luxembourg a few times, and I'd like to see what it looks like now, and send him some pictures. He's very interested in gardens."
