Heroic Tales, Wednesday, Period Two

Once again, class was nautically themed and being held in the Danger Shop. This time, though, as soon as they arrived the students would be climbing aboard a submarine that was a replica of the one described in Eighty Thousand Kilometres Beneath The Ocean.

"Today, in the spirit of Mr. Verne's adventure tale, we too are going to explore the ocean!" Thor told his class. "I have it on good authority that of all his stories, this one has stood the test of time with regards to the scientific theories mentioned within the novel. So once everyone has found a suitable vantage point," he gestured to the large viewing area at the bow of the submarine, and then the several large portholes along both port and starboard, "we shall depart."

With that, Thor (gently) pressed a button on the control console, and they were off.

Nautically

It's not much of a lecture, but you can listen to it as you find a good lookout. Or you can poke at some of the consoles, in all their envisioned-by-a-19th-century-author goodness.

The submarine will take the students to visit sights such as the Transatlantic telegraph cable (Part 1: Ch I), corals of the Red Sea (Part 2: Ch IV), the wrecks of the battle of Vigo Bay (Part 2: Ch XI), the Antarctic ice shelves (Part 2: Ch XIV) and many other fascinating sights beneath the ocean (http://www.its.uci.edu/~mredmond/Maps/Nemo.html).

The button-pressing doesn't take up too much of his attention, it's a Danger Shop program so it's pretty much all automatic anyway.

Oh, yes, Cosette was going to be all over those consoles, peering at things and poking them and not really thinking too much about whether the console-poking might lead to bad things. At least, until she got distracted by the view out of one of the portholes and ended up plastered to the glass in total fascination.

"I never thought about what it would look like under the water!"

Said the girl who hadn't lived near an ocean until she came to Fandom.

Flick didn't necessarily like being in something so enclosed but he took a spot anyway and just focused on the sights.

Could Cosette stay glued to her porthole to take in all the sights and take notes at the same time? The jury was still out on that, but she was certainly going to try.

Her attempts to take pictures would further complicate matters. Not that she minded.

Don't mind Rapunzel. She'd be over here with her nose actually pressed against the glass of a porthole, trying to see everything she could.

Vider Bearskin

Vider was maybe not the biggest fan of the small enclosed space surrounded by miles of water, but as long as she kept reminding herself it was all just pretend, it was fine.
