Public Service - On the Edge, Monday, Period 2

"Okay, rookies. Today I'm gonna take you guys to the second site where I wanna see a water filter go up," Reno said, arms crossed over his chest as the portal waited open for them behind him on the Causeway. "This one's gonna be the harsh one. We're gonna be standing practically knee-deep in the ruins of Midgar's Sector Three, there will be kids beggin' at you, and there's even a chance that we'll run into a few monsters I didn't warn you about - little flabby spiky things or worms about as big as we are. I got the monsters handled if we do, though the reports pointed to an all-clear this morning when I checked in with my buddy back there. If any of the things I mentioned aren't your cup of tea, you're welcome to occupy yourselves at the other site instead."

He was feeling better about leaving a handful of students to work without him in the Square, since the locals had really only had a problem with him. They'd leave the students to do their thing back there. And besides, he'd arranged for a babysitter this week.

"We're gonna get dropped off just outside the Seventh Heaven, one of the, like, two little bars that's managed to open up selling crappy 'whatever we can ferment' booze to the locals. From there you can get an idea of which way you'd rather head, and we'll make sure anyone who doesn't want to stick around the ruins has an escort back to the other site, where we'll all be meeting for our portal back at the end of the day. Any questions? Good. C'mon."

And then he was turning and walking through the portal, waving his students through along with him.

Oh Look, Ruins!

Contemplate which site you want to end up at. Can you handle the ruins? Would you rather stay and work in the Square, where Reno had you guys before? There's probably not much that you can get done there without some means to haul equipment in just yet, but it keeps you from seeing some of the harsher stuff, right?

These are the important questions, people.

"Okay, moment of truth, yo," Reno said as he led the students out into the streets of Edge, in front of what was… probably a bar, anyway. "Those of you who wanna see the ruins, no need to decide if you're gonna be able to work in 'em or not just yet, stick with me. The rest of you are with that guy."

Reno jerked a thumb toward… a three-foot-fall anthropomorphic cat. Because of course he did. The cat gave a bright smile and a cheerful wave hello.

"That's Cait Sith, and despite appearances, he can kick all your asses using a megaphone if he feels like it. Plus the locals like him. You'll be in good hands. Take a moment to figure out which way you wanna go. People who head back to the Square can start roping off the area they wanna work, and we'll get equipment in for there next week. People who wanna check out the other site, we'll be lookin' to try to get that much done today. End of class, I'm gonna want you to let me know if you have a preference about which site you'll wanna be at for the rest of the semester, and I'll try to assign you where you'll fit best from here on in, yo."

Those of you who went with the cat back to the Square, here's where you get to work cordoning off the area you'll need, and whatnot. Feel free to talk to the cat about Edge and the like. He's a friendly little guy with a Scottish accent. For… some reason or another.

If you're feeling braver or just want to get a better idea of what you'll be working with throughout Edge, follow Reno to the ruins, here. It's pretty much exactly what it sounds like - the construction ends, and twisted wreckage and general chaos is pretty strong, here. There are hungry-looking children and the sick and the like hanging around here, and for the most part, they're watching warily from a distance, though the occasional kid will run up and ask for food or money. The locals around here seem far more relaxed around Reno than the people in the Square did last week, and a few of the children even call him by name before he hands them a few gold coins from his pockets.

Ask Reno questions, or scout around for a place to set up the filter. Work starts next week.

Once the class period is almost through, Reno will lead the ruins party to the Square where they had been working last week to meet up with Cait Sith and anyone who might have gone with him.

"If any of you got a preference about which site you're working at from here on, let me know now, or I'm gonna assume it's okay to assign you to either, yo. We'll be starting construction, or at least hauling in materials, next week."

When they tag in stating whichever site they wound up at. It doesn't much matter this week which they pick, since Cait Sith is here to babysit, too.

In the Square, before heading back to Fandom through the portal. Or just Reno, after you're through the portal. Cait Sith isn't coming along with us back to the island, unfortunately.

I just want a Cait Sith of my very own.

Any questions, tag me down here and I'll get to them as soon as I can! Hopefully my power will hang in there long enough for me to do so. I woke up in the middle of a power outage, and apparently Halifax is littered with fallen trees again.

Four

Karina Lyle

Four had energy bars in his pockets that he surreptitiously handed out to the kids who came close to him. In exchange, he asked them to show him what they thought were the best places in the ruins, which might not be great for water filters, but would help him know where to find good defensible positions if something invaded.

I want a Cait Sith of my very own too. Perferably I'd get Reeve's power too, though, so it's not just a strange toy...

(And it'd be really creepy to have a Cait Sith that Reeve was controlling, all things considered...)

o.o Yeah, no, I want my Cait Sith to be totally my own. No middle-aged men puppeting my personal talking kitty doll, please.

None of the things he'd mentioned about the second site were Karina's cup of tea.

That wasn't going to stop her from going to the second site, though, and she looked grimly determined about it.

I'm sorry these are the things I think of first thing in the morning. XD;

Karina had actually bothered to dress down for this, so she was in a worn pair of jeans and an old t-shirt, neither of which she'd usually be caught dead in. It didn't make her blend in any, but it left her less leery of getting dirty which, given everything, was probably a good thing.

Once again, she'd brought no food, no nothing for the kids, and she ignored the twinges of guilt she felt, when she had to turn the few kids that came up to her down.

Rather than ask Reno questions, Karina was stubbornly set on scouting the location, even though it made her skin crawl more than a bit and the sheer level of destruction was something that she was still having trouble wrapping her mind around.

Karina was at the second site today, and doing her job in scouting out the area.

The first site was comparatively easier to bear but Karina, yeah, she could see how getting water here would be a really good thing.

Barry Ween

Barry had packed along some additional gear other than the water filters today. Despite the fact the class was focused on getting drinkable water, he doubted that Reno would object to him bringing it along.

"I brought something extra today," Barry said indicating the crates before going through the portal to the site visit today. "Food synthesizers. Two of them. They only make grits but it's better than nothing. Is there a specific place you want them to go?"

Reno considered the crates, and then nodded. Hey, grits were fine dining compared to what they were currently eating.

"Those can come with us to the ruins site," he decided. "The people there need 'em the most. We'll have to find somewhere safe to stash 'em or they'll walk away on us, though."

"I can secure them to any foundation," Barry said thoughtfully. "But I'll let you make the call."

Per Reno's direction, Barry brought the two food synthesizers to the ruins and put them in secure locations for the locals to be able to access.

"This isn't going to run out," Barry announced looking at the locals who might try to rush him. "Just get in line and everyone can take a turn."

"Make sure they're down good," Reno replied. "Might require some welding, even. I can take care of that, if it comes to it. People want it bad enough, they'll figure out how to make off with 'em one way or another. The person with the food gets the power, yo."

Reno had very little faith in Edge's locals. He'd seen them at their worst, though.

Anders

Barry gave Reno a smirk. "Really? I've been one of your rookies before. Do you even doubt I can lock this fucker down so no one can take it?"

Reno considered Barry for, oh, all of three seconds before shaking his head and chuckling.

"Nah," he conceded. "You lock that thing down good, Rookie. Just so long as you ain't servin' them coffee, I figure you're set, yo."

Oh, this was a hard choice. On the one hand, Anders could do more real good in the ruins.

On the other: Giant. Talking. Cat. Anders' not-so-inner kitty fan was asquee.

It seemed like most of his classmates were headed to the ruins, so he let himself follow Cait Sith back toward the square, then rolled up his sleeves and started shifting small bits of rubble from the construction site to elsewhere in the square. He kept up a steady stream of casual chit-chat with Cait as he did it. How often did he get a chance to talk to a cat, anyhow?

"Fuck, with the water being as fucked up as it is, weasel shit coffee would be a step up from what they're drinking now," Barry said as he started moving the crates through the portal. "See you on the other side."

Kaylin had barely made it to class in time to make the portal, so she just followed on through to the ruins.

Children. It was as if it was made for Kaylin. Within minutes she found herself seated on the ground telling majorly censored versions of some of her exploits with the Hawks.

Minako Aino

Kathy was also at the second site, looking grimly determined. There was so much hardship and poverty here that it hurt, but she had a job to do.

That didn't stop her from slipping food and supplies to particularly hungry looking kids. There was no force on earth that could stop her from doing that.
