Heroic Tales, Wednesday, Period Two

Thor's students would have recieved an email sometime last week telling them to read The Trio of Soldiers which is the player's awful meta version of The Three Musketeers in preparation for today, and also that they would be meeting in the salle. Hopefully anyone who had signed up for Thor's class thinking they were getting a typical literature discussion course was not too disappointed at how this semester was panning out.

Once everyone was assembled, Thor began to speak. "If you read the assigned tale, I'm sure you can hazard a guess as to why you are here. If you have not- well, that is unfortunate, as you missed a truly exciting tale of intrigue and adventure! But you are still welcome to participate in today's lesson.

The idea of dueling was instrumental in setting off the events of the novel, and so today that is what I will have you practice doing. Although I do not encourage you to take this knowledge and use it to challenge your other schoolmates, as that is not considered common practice here," he warned. He picked up an épée and began to demonstrate the blade and footwork involved in fencing. It wasn't his preferred method of close combat, sure, but he was reasonably good with a sword, as it happened. "Please equip yourself with the necessary protective equipment before trying this yourself," he added. "Begin with practicing the movements on your own, and once you feel confident, you may practice hitting an actual target," Thor gestured to an array of practice dummies. "And of course, should you desire an actual opponent, you may challenge a classmate, though again I stress the importance of the protective equipment."

This was something they hadn't actually done in military school but Flick figured he could pick it up easily enough. He picked up the épée and started giving it several practice swings to get comfortable.

Daphne kind of wanted to keep the sword... and wanted a Musketeer Soldier of her own.

Rapunzel was mostly spending her time marveling at the lightness of the épée -- for whatever reason, she had always thought that swords would be a lot heavier! And maybe she'd rather that they were a little heavier? This didn't seem like it was really going to hurt people, even if it was clearly an effective weapon.

She eventually began carefully practicing the footwork before approaching a dummy and whacking it a few times before she had to untangle herself from her hair. And then repeated the process. And again.

Maybe she wasn't really cut out for this kind of combat. Maybe.

Yes, okay, Cosette was intrigued by the demonstration and not entirely because it was a good excuse to look at Thor for extended periods of time. And of course she had read the book.

She and some of the girls at the convent school had occasionally played at fencing with sticks from the garden; her father and "uncle," in their capacity as gardeners, saved a few for her just for this purpose. But they could only do that for a few minutes at a time, very quietly, and with care to not let any of the sisters catch them at it. They hadn't known exactly what they were doing at the time, either, and she hadn't expected she'd ever actually learn how.

So . . . did that mean Cosette was actually taking notes? Obviously.

It was the protective gear that had Cosette frowning; that was bulkier than she'd thought it would be (though in retrospect that made sense, she supposed) and she felt much less agile with it on. Still! No matter! She got to learn how to fence!

If you called going at half speed through the footwork with the epée in one hand and her notebook in the other, constantly consulting her notes, learning how to fence, anyway.

Vider wasn't really sure what use such flimsy little swords were supposed to be in battle, but okay.

Johnny had not read the book. He had watched the most recent movie, though, and he appreciated that even an old story like this could feature hot ninja women and airships. Color him surprised!
