Technology and You- Monday- 1st period

The class was back in the Danger Shopped computer lab, but instead of computers today they'd each find an iPhone and an iPad. It was kind of easy to figure out what class was going to be about right from the start with this course. The projection screen was back, too.

"So most of you have some experience with phones and tablets, which is awesome. So we're going to go a little more in depth," Kitty said. "Phones were originally invented as a form of communication. You could use them to dial someone's unique phone number to call them up and talk to them, no matter what the distance. In recent years that's extended to texting, which is the same thing, only you type messages at people. It's faster and great for when you're feeling antisocial, or just don't like talking to people. Now with smartphones, you can also download apps for a whole ton of different purposes, like watching movies and videos or reading or playing games or shopping. And the tablet is a bigger version of the phone, only you don't make calls or anything from it. Depending on what you're using it for primarily, you could get away with using a tablet instead of a computer.

"For your activity today, I want you to try calling and texting someone. We're in a simulated environment and you can't take these devices with you, so I've programmed in some numbers for everyone in this class. Call or text at least one person," Kitty said, and showed them on the projection screen what to press to do that.

"Then when you're finished with that, I want you to download at least one thing from the app store," Kitty said, and showed them how to do that, too. "There are some things you have to pay for, but plenty of apps are free. It's your choice what you want to get, because again, Danger Shop, yadda yadda it's not really real yadda, but get some things, play around, and get used to it."

Phones were about Nathan's least favorite in the world but he could tolerate them for a brief class period. He suppressed a wince at the intense buzzing in his head and sent off a brief text.

hi.

He could spell that word and everything.

Nathan had some experience with this considering he had a tablet now so he went and downloaded a few apps that would read lines of text.

Ichabod knew he wanted one of these. He didn't usually feel the need to own modern technology, but a device that was both used for messages and for searching the knowledge of the internet? Irresistible.

Typing on these wasn't exactly as easy as one could expect, especially not since Ichabod saw no reason to give up politeness for fewer words.

So, he tried to text everyone in the class:

Dear friends, this is Ichabod Crane attempting to send a text message to you. If you wish to respond please use the number I sent this from. Yours respectfully, etc

Edward couldn't get much further than writing his own name-- and apparently, accidentally broadcasting that to the whole class.

Ichabod was browsing through the app store, distracted by the sheer number of so called apps available. He wasn't going to pick just a few anytime soon, or be happy to leave this smartphone behind when class ended.

Celia was still so tired that she was frankly proud of herself for making it to class at all.

She managed to figure out the whole texting thing, which was not so very different from the electronic mail, and sent out a very brief text.

Good morning.

And with that done, she was just going to put her head down for a few minutes -- until her phone buzzed or beeped and disturbed her, of course.

. . . well, now Cosette wanted an iPad, too. Since she'd already familiarized herself with her iPhone, she ended up spending the lecture playing around with apps on the iPad and being amazed at how much extra screen space there was.

She definitely wanted one; the catch was just that she was trying to figure out whether or not she ought to ask her father for one. She knew he'd get it for her if she did, but . . . well, did she really need it?

Cosette poked around for a while, looking at apps by category.

And then she found Wolfram Alpha, and goodbye, everyone, she might just play with this one forever.

Alex hadn't had much of a chance to check out these new devices but after having a go at both the iPhone and the iPad, she knew she wanted at least one of them. She was debating on whether or not she could ask her parents to help pay for one, she could always say that it was for school.
