Philosophy of Food, Friday period 3

The desk was back at the front of the room this week, with the students' chairs wherever they cared to put them. The food was covered, this time with identical silver lids.

When everyone was listening, Hannibal stood behind the table and spoke.

"While I like to think that food can truly be an art form, I am well aware that not everybody shares that opinion. Nor does everybody have that option. Art, preference, culture - many things affect how we think of food. One of those is economics. Availability." He looked at them all seriously. "Not everybody gets the best food. Not everybody gets food they can eat. Some people are lucky if they get anything."

He gestured at the dishes. "So. Each of you gets one of these. No peeking. When you each have your own, we'll uncover them all. If you don't like what you have, feel free to try to get something else. Barter, bargain, trade, give away, or steal, whatever you like, remembering that you may still need to see each other later. Consider this a hands-on experience."

[OOC: If you play and want to do it randomly, just click a dish below and see what you get. But feel free to check them all out and mod your results for the most interesting playing. :) ]

Hannibal approves of being evil. And of being magnanimous. Just don't be dull or rude.

Talk to Hannibal!

What was behind dish number nine? Evan shrugged and reached for that one, peering at the lid curiously.

When Evan opened the lid of the chocolate mousse cake, he needed to sit and stare, dumbfounded, at it for a moment.

"Oh, wow," he breathed. "Um, does anybody want to share this with me? This looks fantastic, but it's probably too rich for me to eat all in one sitting anyway."

Emma picked number seven, that seemed like a god choice.

Emma shrugged when she lifted the lid.

Some kind of sausage and mashed potatoes, that was good enough for her.

Raven was no stranger to food scarcity -- though it wasn't something she'd had to deal with recently. She had, in fact, been on both ends of the spectrum, and as such felt she rather already knew about this lesson.

But what the hell, she'd give it a shot. Maybe without even rolling her eyes too hard. She didn't think too hard before grabbing a dish. Number five. Whatever.

Raven held up her own empty dish. "If you're offering," she said.

She was pretty good at finding people willing to share their good fortune, it seemed.

Nathan went with dish number two. He reached for it carefully, hoping it was something halfway decent.

"I...don't even know what this is," Nathan said, peering at it. "It looks squishy though. Uh, feel free to try it, if you want."

"I'm totally offering," Evan replied, looking around for anyone else who might be interested, and then shrugging his shoulders and cutting his portion in half. "Can you eat this much?"

As much as he liked sweets, his sweet tooth was not actually that strong.

"I can at least try," Raven said. She probably honestly wouldn't have any trouble eating all of the chocolate mousse, but it didn't seem the time to point that out. "Thank you so much for sharing."

Alana went with dish door number eight and got a bowl of rice.

"Rice," she announced, with neither enthusiasm or disdain. "'sfine, but I can trade if somebody really wants to."

"You're welcome," Evan replied, smiling and giving his shoulders a little shrug. "It's better to share with someone who didn't get anything than to let so much of this go to waste just because I can't finish it, right? This cake is sort of... you know... art. I'd feel bad throwing any of it out or anything like that."

"I suspect that's part of the lesson," Raven observed. "Even in my time, people wasted a lot of food, and I gather it's only gotten worse in the last sixty years. But there are still loads of people living off of little to nothing."

[personal profile] genesishero 2014-07-26 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
"It's going to be a constant, isn't it?" Evan frowned a little. "Just because we have ways of growing more food than we could ever possibly need, there are always going to be people in need of it. People in general are kind of... really bad at sharing."

[personal profile] tigerundercover 2014-07-26 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
"It's not one of our stronger points," Raven agreed. "Sometimes I think things'll never get better until humanity actually evolves into something different."
genesishero: (Worried)

Re: Post what you got, try to get someone else's!

[personal profile] genesishero 2014-07-26 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that was one way to get Evan's attention, right there.

"I don't think humanity knows how to handle evolution," he replied, a little warily. "I mean, it doesn't have a great track record with that sort of thing. Dealing with what's different, at all."

Like the pale blue-gray kid with the lips to his ears, for example.

[personal profile] tigerundercover 2014-07-26 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
"They haven't gotten much better at that, either, no," Raven agreed sadly. "My brother's been researching evolution, and he says that when a new species arises, they never get along with the old one."

[identity profile] never-dull.livejournal.com 2014-07-26 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
"It is indeed." Hannibal nodded at her. "All too often, those who've never experienced want never understand it, through either genuine or willful ignorance. While the latter is impossible to overcome, I do hope to shed a bit of light upon the former."

Re: Post what you got, try to get someone else's!

[identity profile] never-dull.livejournal.com 2014-07-26 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Hannibal chuckled. "Jellied terrine of brown crab with lamb's brains and courgette," he explained. "Rather rich, and more springy than squishy."

Re: Post what you got, try to get someone else's!

[personal profile] genesishero 2014-07-26 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"Never?" Evan chewed on his lip quietly for a moment before speaking again. "I suppose from an evolutionary standpoint, that makes sense. A species is naturally inclined to make certain that they're the most successful one out there. If something else steps up that's arguably genetically superior, that's going to be seen as a threat."

Even if most mutants probably wouldn't be, if humanity hadn't started trying to eradicate them right off the bat.

There was that, yes.

"Not that he's found. Though he really has only gotten started on his research. He's hoping to get into Oxford, so he can keep it going."
