Better Living Through Chemistry [Thursday, July 24, 2014]

"Okay," Ben said, looking out the window at the thunderstorm clouds building up, "today's not exactly as hot as I was planning for when I decided to do this, but I've also never found a day it was too cold to eat ice cream in, so I'm sure it'll be fine."

He held up a metal cannister proudly. "Today we're making ice cream with liquid nitrogen, which is totally fun." He led the class through mixing cream, half and half, and sugar in a bowl until the sugar dissolved. "Now add whatever flavors you want," he said. "There's stuff for chocolate, strawberry, vanilla--and then mix-in for after the ice cream is frozen if you want cookies and cream or whatever."

Ben took his ice cream seriously.

"Now put on your goggles and grab your liquid nitrogen cannisters," he said, "and pour slowly while stirring."

Instant ice cream! Isn't science awesome, guys?

Mmmmm, ice cream.

For more science! Try other people's flavors, notice the texture difference between liquid nitrogen ice cream and traditionally churned stuff, think of other things you could freeze with liquid nitrogen, steal all the maraschino cherries before everyone else gets to them, etc.

Barry took his time and made chocolate ice cream with fudge ripple.

Damn good ice cream.

But now he wanted to go to the pool and pour the remaining liquid nitrogen and see if he could fog out the dorm.

He was in a mood.

Ben, being the Force sensitive type, could pick up on a mood.

"What are you plotting?" he asked, grinning.

Barry gave Ben a sideways glance wondering if he could trust a teacher. Especially with the last name of Skywalker.

Then again he did explode a bunch of ping pong balls last week.

"Ever pour a lot of liquid nitrogen into a pool before?" he asked with a shark-like grin.

"Ooooooh."

Ben was the worst teacher.

"No, but we should!"

"You realize we'll probably fog out the dorm and get in a shitload of trouble, right?" Barry asked. "People will probably think it's a repeat of that noir weekend shit."

Ben sighed. "Probably," he agreed. "What happens with liquid nitrogen and ocean water?"

Barry grinned. "Pretty much the same effect. Especially if you have a shitload of liquid nitrogen and a telekinetic who can safely pour it in while the rest of us stand on the shore."

It was like Barry was giving Ben his next assignment!

Ben grinned back. "That would be astral."

And probably hide an invasion of zombies by accident.

They're probably coming to the island to get CD's and T-shirts of the band at Caritas. You know how dead-heads are.

"Is that next class or are we going now?" Barry asked looking excited.

"Next class," Ben decided. "I need more nitrogen."

Kathy was making cookie dough. And if there was a 1:1 ratio of dough going into her ice cream and dough going into her mouth, well...it was for science! Somehow.

"So much smoother than regular ice cream!" she gushed.

"You're in a good mood," Kathy observed, more than a little suspiciously. "On the radio you were positively chipper."

Well... Chipper for Barry.

"I might be," Barry said struggling to hide a smile. "Just a little. How was your thing with Anders? The squirrels were not forthcoming."

Rather than threatening the squirrels, he'd been talking about what a great day it was. That was enough to make Kathy question.

"It was good," she said, fighting back a little smile. "At least, I thought it went well. I don't know if he did? I hope so. Never mind all that!" It was getting harder not to blush, too. "I can't believe you told the whole island that I'd cut off your head! You're gonna have them all thinking I'm some kind of hooligan!"

"You are a hooligan. In rainbow brite garments," Barry teased.

"Not true," Kathy argued, sticking out her tongue at him. "I'm a hero who keeps the brats of the world in check. Which is why I'm constantly kicking you."

Ben nodded. "Because it freezes so fast, the crystals are smaller."

"Yeah, yeah, yeah," Barry said with a smirk. "Just remember I could have completely embarrassed you on the radio this morning. And I was nice."

"But you wouldn't have," Kathy said immediately. "Because we're friends, right?"

Sorry, Barry. Being friends with Kathy apparently meant that she had ridiculous amounts of faith in you.

"So, yeah, you'll bedevil me when it's just us or whatever, but you're not going to humiliate me in front of the whole island."

Funny how someone could look both sincere and smug at the same time.

"Oh no. I'll totally screw you over one of these days," Barry said with a smirk. "I was just in a good mood this morning so you were lucky."

"I don't believe you," Kathy informed him. "But that brings us right back to why you were in such a good mood in the first place. I don't suppose it had anything to do with a certain visit to a certain store to visit a certain someone?"

"Yes," Barry said with a grin. "I stopped by Turtle and Canary and had the best fucking squishee ever."

Now he's just messing with ya, Kathy.

"If you need some I got a tank back at my lab," Barry offered. "And I got a good supplier from the mainland."

Ben laughed. "Why do you have a tank back at your lab?"

"There's a student on the island who had issues generating cold," Barry explained. "I was using it to test a tool to help block cold generation."

And then he grinned.

"Plus I like freezing bananas."

Ben grinned back. "If you do that with gummy bears you can use those suckers as a legitimate weapon."

Which was fine because she didn't believe a word of it.

"That's fine. Oh, hey, did you know I have class with Elsa later? I'm thinking of giving her some dating advice. The kind that was given to me earlier in the week."

It was important to note that: no, she didn't, and no, she wouldn't.

"Never tried that," Barry said looking intrigued. "Ever make a plastic bottle explode with it?"

"Yeah," Barry said with an even bigger grin. "She may not need that advice. Just so you know."

And that should give you the answer you're looking for, Kathy!

"Oh really," Kathy asked, grinning from ear to ear. "Not even the kind on proper date attire?"

"Nope!" Barry said cheerfully. "She seems to know exactly how to handle herself."

"Wow," Kathy said, clapping her hands with glee. "You know? I think this might go beyond just a crush."

Barry gave Kathy a sharp look. "Don't jinx this. We'll see how it goes."

"I'm not gonna jinx you!" Kathy protested. "I think this is awesome. I've just never seen you speak as nicely to anyone else."

"What the fuck are you talking about?" Barry protested jokingly. "I'm fucking nice to everyone!"

That got him an eyebrow raise. "Is this where you try to convince me you're oozing again?"

"Milk of fucking human kindness!"

"I still think you need to visit the clinic," Kathy teased. "Maybe get a second opinion."

Barry rolled his eyes. "Pfft. Doctors. I know more about my anatomy than they know about their toenails."
