Everything's a Weapon, Wednesday, Period 1

This week's Danger Shop setup probably gave most students an idea right away as to just what sort of trouble Reno had lined up for you today. There was a gray haze in the air from a few smokers across the room, playing cards at a table. People were knocking back drinks left and right. A jukebox was playing Jailhouse Rock, just barely audible over the noises of the people talking and drinking in the bar. No bar on the island, mind. This one was a little larger and a lot busier than those ones typically were.

All the better for keeping the moving targets coming, really.

"Yo, rookies! This week, I'm gonna keep it simple and straightforward." He nodded to the bar scene behind himself. "You're out drinking for some kinda party. Some asshole says something untoward about some other asshole's.. I dunno... fashion sense or something, and suddenly you're right in the middle of the biggest bar brawl this side of Ingvar, yo."

Behind him, one of the simulated men stood, yelling. Another grabbed a bottle and flipped the table out of the way in order to lunge at him.

"You got the entire population of the bar up and fighting now, and the exit is all the way on the other side of the room. Yeah, they're gonna try to drag you in, and yeah, they're using improvised weapons, too. Mostly bottles, chairs, pool cues... Not much variety, but they're wielding them well, yo. Your mission is to either survive until the cops show up to wrangle these losers, or to find your way out before the cops show up. And remember, no powers, yo."

Reno loved his job. He was going to smirk, take a seat at the bar, and order a drink (simulated though it was) as all hell broke loose in the room.

At the bar!

Here's your chance to take a good look around and see what sort of objects there are to use as weapons. It's a typical bar, with pool tables and dart boards and chairs and booze. And, you know, an angry mob.

You want to either not get your ass kicked, or just get the hell out. Neither of these things are going to be easy for you.

Depending on where you're from, you might also want to try to keep your efforts non-lethal this time around. Killing people doesn't generally go over well in this reality, and all. But that one's up to your own discretion.

If they're not too busy brawling to ping in!

If you can get to where he's sitting and drinking through the crowd, and all.

Mmmm, mai tais.

He's got nobody to impress, here.

Mod your brawlers! If you want one to ping from (who will look suspiciously like one of my characters for 'icon space' reasons) feel free to ping me down here, though there'll likely be SP through the day for mandatory time spent in the animation mines.

Minako Aino

This was not a situation where Minako could put her Sailor Venus skills to use.

Her lower lip came out and her face wibbled, her eyes filled up with tears for the senseless violence and bullying going on around her, and Minako turned and ran, darting right for the kitchen. Back door. Minako Aino would go for the back door and try to call the cops from outside. Grab Kathy, Karina, or Eleanor if she spotted them and drag them with her, but this was a job for the cops.

Kathy Li

The kitchen was probably the best bet for escape, yes, except for the fact that the kitchen staff here really wasn't in the mood to let just anybody come barging through. Half of them were still trying to fill orders, and the other half was keeping an eye on the chaos out in the bar proper.

And now all of them were standing there and staring at the girl who had just barged in.

"Hey," the head cook stepped into the way, shoulders squared, looking at Minako disapprovingly. "You're not supposed to be back here."

Celia Bowen

Barry Ween

Barry grabbed a pool cue, snapped it in two and started to mow down the people in the bar with a mix of escrima and parkour styles.

Because if you're going to attack Barry, you're dealing with the wrong fucking teenager.

Minako looked at him with big, sad eyes, looked back at the bar, looked at the kitchens staff, and promptly burst into tears.

"B-b-b-back door?" she sobbed between big sad-and-scared tears. "I need to call the police, my friends are in there. We just stopped for a soda."

The head cook looked between her and the door she had come through, and then heaved a heavy sigh.

"Look, lady," he rumbled, "health regulations say we're not allowed to have people through here without hair nets and proper clothes for the kitchen. But I'll walk you through here just this once."

Because there was something about a crying girl that was hard to deny.

Reno, sitting at the bar and paying vague attention to this, was mostly just nodding. Hey, when he said everything was a weapon, he wasn't ruling out tears and a sad wobbly bottom lip.

Kaylin Neya

Now this was something Kaylin had experience with. It wasn't often that a night out with Teela and Tain didn't end up in some sort of all-out bar brawl.

So, she did what she often did during these things, keeping an eye out for the combatants and taking them out with a bottle to the head or chair to the knees - or groin, if they were particularly unpleasant. If necessary, she'd indulge in a little hand-to-hand, but generally most of the combatants were drunk enough that it wasn't required.

Between bashing people with chairs and bottles, Kaylin sat at the bar and watched the carnage while sipping her drink.

This was just like home.

Karina Lyle

Kathy didn't actually want to fight anyone. This wasn't like any of the other simulations or even what she did in Baltimore--though if she had her ribbon-sticks, people would find themselves tied up or thwacked in the head in short time.

Instead, Kathy needed to protect people. People could fall and get trampled or someone could get really hurt and no one might notice because everyone else was drunk. So, it was up to her (and anyone else she could wrangle to help) to stop that from happening.

Her first great idea fizzled when there wasn't a fire alarm she could pull. She'd figured the loud noise might stop the brawl in its tracks and even if it didn't, it would summon the cops and fire department a lot faster than anything else. She didn't find one of those, but looking up at the ceiling, she noticed sprinklers. Good enough!

She climbed the shelves behind the bar, ignoring the bartender's squawk of outrage, flicking on the lighter that she'd begun carrying especially for this class. Holding it up to the smoke detector, she counted off the seconds until the sprinklers went off.

Almost a minute later, Kathy was convinced that this place was a death trap waiting to happen, but eventually the mechanism clicked and cold, murky water began to spray down.

Hopefully, that might startle people into clam/sobriety. But even if it didn't, it would still make it harder to fight.

Once Kathy had gotten the sprinkler going, she hopped down off the shelves, onto the bar, and grabbed someone's half-finished drink.

She had people to collect and alcohol in someone's eyes was usually enough to make them stand down for a bit. If anyone came at her or refused to stop beating someone who was already down, they were in for a faceful of Wild Turkey.

Assholes.

If anyone needed a rescue or an escort, Kathy was ready to leap into the fray and pull them to safety behind the bar!

Reno gave Kathy a kind of side-eye from over the top of his watered-down mai tai.

"... So you figured you'd solve this by flooding the place and makin' the floors more slippery - and therefore more dangerous - for the brawlers and your classmates alike?"

Not everybody could bounce, Kathy.

"I..." Kathy looked around and saw that none of the brawlers looked any less inclined to brawl. "I kinda figured it would, umm, stop the fighting?"

"Can't win 'em all, I guess," Reno mused, pursing his lips in exasperation as he swirled his drink around in his glass. Ugh. "Well, better start damage control, yo. Otherwise these people are gonna have a load of busted necks to go along with their bumps and bruises."

Alana

Alana was on team get the hell out. She could take care of herself, but a lot of these guys were a lot bigger than she was -- and, frankly, none of them were worth getting a black eye over.

She jumped from the floor to a barstool to the top of the bar, where she perched in a corner and kept an eye on the action. When it had died down enough, she' dslide off the counter and over to the side door.

Or as they called it in Dauntless, "Tuesday." Four smirked slightly, already scoping out exits and weapons.

Eleanor Lamb

Well, here went nothing. Eleanor grabbed a beer bottle and brandished it as a bludgeon. For anything further she found she might need, she'd just disarm one of her opponents. That always worked well enough before.

A shame the pool cues were too thick to serve as proper skewers.

Eleanor felt a little dumb staying behind to ask this, but perhaps she ought to.

"You said no powers," she said, carefully. "What about ones we can't control?"

She might have chosen to flee the scene, were she a normal human being. But she wasn't, so that impacted her decision-making.

"You can't control what you can't control," Reno replied with a shrug. "Is it something that could potentially put your classmates in danger? That's all I care about when it comes to shit your body just does on its own, yo."

He was easy.

Jalian d'Arsennette y ken Selvren

Jalian could, of course, have just broken the nearest window and climbed out, but that would've been boring.

She decided instead to lay down a line of alcohol between her and the brawlers and use the candle on the table to set it on fire. Either they'd think twice about coming her way, or the place would catch on fire and she'd get to find out what that would look like in simulation; it was win-win!

Of course, then Kathy turned on the sprinklers.

Jalian sighed, rolled her eyes, and broke the window.

Kathy wouldn't have felt bad about ruining Jalian's plan if she'd known about it. Because who thought it would be a good idea to light a fire in a goddamn bar?! Alcohol! Exploding glass bottles! Wood and varnish!

Were you crazy?!?

Well, it wasn't like it was real, right? Any more than those cars of Bond's had really crashed. She was curious to see how the technology would handle something like that!

To be fair, there was no defense against giant shiny ~~anime~~ Sad Teenage Girl Eyes of Doom. Poor cook never had a chance.

Minako blubbered her thanks as she dashed out the back door, pulling out her cell phone as she went. The moment she was 'out,' the tears magically vanished and Minako practically skipped around to the front door to sit 'outside' and wait for class to be over.

"Nine-One-One emergency," she sang, bouncing right outside the bar. "My sensei is very very strange and now I need to redo my make-up, but at least I got out before someone set off the sprinklers (http://fandomhigh.livejournal.com/3662067.html?thread=208637683#t208637683) and I don't need to wring out my hair."

"Oh, nothing like that," Eleanor said quickly. "I mean, anything potentially harmful is under my control. I meant more ... I heal fast, I move fast, and I'm stronger than I ought to be. So I feel a bit as though I'm cheating, using that when you say 'no powers,' but it isn't as though I've the option of going without."

Reno considered that for a moment, tilting his head and setting down his drink.

"Yeah, I can see how that'd be tricky to rein in," he allowed. "Healing fast is something that won't even come up in this class because of the Danger Shop, at least, but I can see how it'd lead to you bein' less concerned about bein' hurt in the first place, yo. Strength and speed are hard to dial back, too."

He frowned thoughtfully, and then added, "But in the end, what I'm lookin' for here is how resourceful you are with whatever I've provided, yo. I'm talkin' about not tryin' to make use of what's made available to you and just jumpin' straight to using magic or whatever. I saw Celia the other week usin' telekinesis to swing an umbrella around, and I called her out on that. That's a power she made a deliberate choice to use, instead of pickin' the thing up herself."

Powers always were a sticky subject, though. It had been tricky figuring out where the line was drawn back when he was attending Fight Club, too, if he remembered correctly.

"If she has full control over her magic, why not use it?" Eleanor asked -- not argumentatively, just curious. "Is the idea to adapt to one's surroundings, in case the powers are to be taken away? Or simply not to cheat through the assignment? I keep from teleporting in class, as that counts as a power, but that can't be taken away from me, either, whereas in a real-life situation, I might make that choice."

"Little bit of both, honestly," Reno replied with a shrug. "I'm obviously not gonna fault anybody for usin' their powers in a real situation, but the spirit of this class is to use your head, to work the environment to your advantage, yo. If the weapons you're pickin' up aren't working for you without resorting to powers first, then you can do better. And here's the place to challenge that, to challenge yourself without havin' to worry about what'll happen if you're not flyin' around or throwing lightning spells around or whatever, yo."
